Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Introduction to the IMDG Code

  • Understand the purpose, scope, and structure of the IMDG Code.
  • Identify international organizations responsible for dangerous goods transport (IMO, UN, IATA, ICAO).
  • Recognize the importance of IMDG compliance in maritime safety and pollution prevention.

2. Classification of Dangerous Goods

  • Learn about IMDG’s nine hazard classes:
    1. Explosives
    2. Gases
    3. Flammable liquids
    4. Flammable solids
    5. Oxidizing substances and organic peroxides
    6. Toxic and infectious substances
    7. Radioactive materials
    8. Corrosive substances
    9. Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles
  • Understand packing groups (I, II, III) and their risk levels.

3. Packaging and Labeling of Dangerous Goods

  • Apply packaging, marking, and labeling requirements based on UN specifications.
  • Interpret danger labels, placards, and Marine Pollutant (MP) markings.
  • Understand Limited Quantity (LQ) and Excepted Quantity (EQ) exemptions.

4. Documentation and Compliance Requirements

  • Learn about Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods (DGD) and Dangerous Goods Manifest (DGM).
  • Understand Multimodal Dangerous Goods Form (MDGF) and Container Packing Certificate (CPC).
  • Ensure proper recordkeeping for inspections and audits.

5. Stowage, Segregation, and Handling of Dangerous Goods

  • Follow IMDG Code segregation requirements for incompatible goods.
  • Implement safe stowage planning based on vessel type and cargo hazard levels.
  • Apply best practices for loading/unloading hazardous cargo at ports and terminals.

6. Emergency Response and Incident Management

  • Follow Emergency Response Procedures (EmS) and Medical First Aid Guide (MFAG).
  • Develop spill containment and firefighting strategies for dangerous goods.
  • Coordinate with port authorities and emergency responders during hazardous material incidents.

7. Security Measures for Dangerous Goods Transport

  • Implement security protocols to prevent unauthorized access or tampering.
  • Comply with ISPS Code and MARPOL Annex III regulations.
  • Understand measures against terrorism and illicit trafficking of hazardous substances.

8. Regulatory Compliance and Audits

  • Ensure compliance with SOLAS, MARPOL, ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road), and RID (Rail Transport Regulations).
  • Conduct self-audits and risk assessments for IMDG compliance.
  • Prepare for Port State Control (PSC) and classification society inspections.

9. Case Studies and Practical Applications

  • Analyze real-world incidents involving dangerous goods transport failures.
  • Participate in hands-on packaging, labeling, and documentation exercises.
  • Develop an IMDG Code compliance strategy for a shipping company or port facility.
