Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Fundamentals of Product Storage and Transport Systems

  • Understand the importance of storage, loading, and transport in supply chain management.
  • Learn about product classifications (crude oil, LNG, refined products, chemicals, and LPG).
  • Identify key design considerations for storage and transportation.

2. Storage Systems Design and Engineering

  • Design above ground and underground storage tanks (fixed roof, floating roof, bullet tanks, cryogenic storage).
  • Understand API 650, API 620, and ASME standards for tank design and construction.
  • Optimize tank farm layout, fire protection, and safety measures.
  • Implement vapor recovery and emissions control systems.

3. Loading and Unloading Facilities Design

  • Develop truck, rail, and marine loading/unloading terminals.
  • Select appropriate loading arms, metering systems, and custody transfer equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, API MPMS, and OIML R117 standards for loading operations.
  • Integrate automation and digital control systems in loading facilities.

4. Pipeline and Transport System Design

  • Design pipelines for liquid and gas transport, considering pressure, temperature, and flow dynamics.
  • Optimize pump and compressor station placement for efficient product movement.
  • Apply API 1104, ASME B31.4, and ASME B31.8 codes for pipeline construction and integrity.
  • Implement leak detection, cathodic protection, and pigging systems for pipeline maintenance.

5. Safety, Risk Management, and Environmental Compliance

  • Conduct HAZOP and risk assessments for storage and transport systems.
  • Ensure compliance with EPA, MARPOL, DOT, and local transportation regulations.
  • Implement best practices for spill prevention, fire protection, and emergency response.

6. Optimization and Cost Management in Storage and Transport

  • Improve supply chain efficiency with real-time tracking and inventory management systems.
  • Utilize simulation tools for pipeline and storage optimization.
  • Apply Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to reduce operational costs.

7. Case Studies and Practical Applications

  • Analyze real-world examples of storage and transport system failures and successes.
  • Participate in hands-on exercises for tank sizing, pipeline flow modeling, and loading facility design.
  • Develop a customized storage and transport system design for a specific facility or product.
