Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Fundamentals of Marine Safety Systems

  • Understand the importance of marine safety systems for crew and vessel protection.
  • Identify key safety systems on board ships, offshore platforms, and port facilities.
  • Learn about safety system regulations from IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, and classification societies.

2. Lifesaving Equipment and Emergency Response Systems

  • Identify and maintain lifeboats, life rafts, and rescue boats.
  • Understand life jacket, immersion suit, and personal safety gear requirements.
  • Operate emergency position-indicating radio beacons (EPIRB) and search and rescue transponders (SART).
  • Conduct launch and retrieval drills for lifeboats and life rafts.

3. Fire-Fighting Systems and Fire Prevention

  • Identify types of onboard fire-fighting systems (fixed and portable systems).
  • Maintain and inspect CO₂, foam, dry powder, and water mist fire suppression systems.
  • Conduct fire detection system tests and emergency response drills.
  • Understand fire zone compartments and passive fire protection measures.

4. Emergency Alarm and Communication Systems

  • Operate and test general alarm, public address (PA), and emergency signals.
  • Use marine radio communication systems (VHF, GMDSS, distress signals).
  • Ensure functionality of emergency lighting and escape route indicators.

5. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hazardous Material Handling

  • Implement best practices for PPE usage in marine environments.
  • Understand procedures for handling hazardous and flammable materials.
  • Conduct risk assessments for safety equipment deployment.

6. Safety Equipment Inspection and Preventive Maintenance

  • Develop routine inspection and maintenance schedules for safety systems.
  • Learn proper storage, testing, and servicing of safety equipment.
  • Use checklists and compliance documentation for regulatory audits.

7. Emergency Drills and Crisis Management Procedures

  • Conduct abandon ship, fire, and man-overboard drills.
  • Implement evacuation planning and mustering procedures.
  • Coordinate emergency response teams for onboard incidents.

8. Regulatory Compliance and Documentation

  • Ensure compliance with IMO conventions, flag state requirements, and classification society rules.
  • Maintain safety records, logs, and audit reports.
  • Prepare for port state inspections and safety management system (SMS) audits.

9. Case Studies and Practical Applications

  • Analyze real-world marine safety incidents and lessons learned.
