Basic Electrical Workshop Equipment

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Fundamentals of Electrical Workshop Safety

  • Understand electrical hazards and risk mitigation.
  • Apply personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements for electrical work.
  • Follow safe handling, grounding, and insulation procedures.

2. Overview of Electrical Workshop Tools and Equipment

  • Identify and use basic hand tools, including:
    • Screwdrivers, pliers, wire strippers, and crimping tools.
    • Wrenches, hex keys, and insulation tape.
  • Operate power tools for electrical work, such as:
    • Electric drills, soldering irons, and cable crimping machines.

3. Electrical Measuring Instruments and Testing Equipment

  • Understand and use multimeters for voltage, current, and resistance measurement.
  • Learn how to operate clamp meters, megohmmeters (insulation testers), and continuity testers.
  • Use oscilloscopes for signal analysis and troubleshooting.

4. Electrical Components and Wiring Accessories

  • Identify types of wires, cables, and connectors.
  • Work with resistors, capacitors, relays, fuses, and circuit breakers.
  • Assemble and test terminal blocks, switches, and sockets.

5. Practical Wiring and Circuit Assembly

  • Understand basic electrical circuits and wiring configurations.
  • Learn proper cable routing, conduit installation, and panel wiring.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of electrical connections and components.

6. Introduction to Electrical Panels and Distribution Boards

  • Identify main electrical panels and sub-panels.
  • Understand wiring of circuit breakers, relays, and distribution systems.
  • Apply basic load calculations for safe electrical installations.

7. Soldering, Termination, and Cable Management

  • Learn proper soldering techniques for electrical joints.
  • Use heat shrink tubing and terminal lugs for safe connections.
  • Implement cable management techniques for organized installations.

8. Hands-On Exercises and Workshop Practice

  • Participate in practical exercises for tool handling and circuit assembly.
  • Conduct real-world troubleshooting scenarios and fault diagnosis.
  • Develop a personal toolkit checklist for electrical workshop use.
