Value Stream Mapping (VSM): Optimizing the Flow
| 11 – 15 May 2026, Dubai | 10 – 14 Aug. 2026, Abu Dhabi |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a powerful Lean tool used to visualize the entire flow of information and materials required to bring a product or service to a customer. This course provides participants with the skills to identify waste and bottlenecks that are often invisible in daily operations. By creating a "big picture" view of the process, organizations can move away from local optimizations and focus on systemic improvements that reduce lead time and increase value.
The scope of this training involves the creation of both "Current State" and "Future State" maps. Attendees will learn the standard VSM iconography and how to calculate critical metrics such as Takt Time, Cycle Time, and Lead Time. The curriculum emphasizes the strategic nature of VSM, showing how it serves as a roadmap for continuous improvement and helps management prioritize Kaizen events and capital investments.
Coverage includes the identification of the Eight Wastes within a value stream, the concept of "One-Piece Flow," and the implementation of Pull systems. Participants will work through practical mapping exercises, from initial data collection at the Gemba to the design of a leaner, more efficient future state. By the end of this course, attendees will be able to lead VSM workshops that transform fragmented processes into streamlined, customer-focused value streams.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Define the purpose and benefits of Value Stream Mapping.
- Distinguish between Value-Added and Non-Value-Added activities.
- Utilize standard VSM symbols to map complex processes.
- Calculate Takt Time based on customer demand.
- Measure and record Cycle Time, Lead Time, and Changeover Time.
- Identify the Eight Wastes (Muda) within the value stream.
- Visualize the flow of information alongside the flow of materials.
- Construct an accurate "Current State" map of a process.
- Design a "Future State" map that eliminates identified waste.
- Implement Lean concepts such as Flow, Pull, and Leveling.
- Develop a VSM Implementation Plan with clear milestones.
- Facilitate a VSM workshop for cross-functional teams.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Lean Coordinators, Production Managers, Industrial Engineers, Supply Chain Professionals, and Continuous Improvement Specialists.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
