Managing Projects in Assess, Select, and Define

23 – 27 Mar. 2026, Abu Dhabi17 – 21 Aug. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The "Front-End Loading" (FEL) phase of a project is the most critical period for value creation and risk mitigation, particularly during the Assess, Select, and Define stages. This course provides an advanced framework for governing these early project gates, where the fundamental "Go/No-Go" decisions are made. It focuses on the strategic discipline required to ensure that only the most viable technical and commercial concepts proceed to detailed execution, thereby avoiding costly changes later in the lifecycle.

The scope of this training encompasses the technical appraisal of concepts in "Assess," the rigorous multi-criteria evaluation in "Select," and the comprehensive engineering definition in "Define." Participants will learn how to lead "Gate Reviews," manage "Conceptual Engineering" teams, and develop robust business cases that account for lifecycle economics. The course addresses the complexities of "Uncertainty Management" and provides practical tools for refining cost and schedule estimates from "Order of Magnitude" to "Definitive" accuracy.

Coverage includes the implementation of "Value Engineering" at the concept stage, the execution of "Technology Readiness" assessments, and the management of "Pre-FEED" and "FEED" deliverables. Attendees will explore the "Decision Quality" framework and learn how to present complex technical options to executive boards for sanction. By mastering the management of the Assess, Select, and Define phases, professionals will be able to anchor project success in a foundation of rigorous analysis and strategic alignment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Navigate the "Front-End Loading" (FEL) lifecycle with precision.
  • Execute concept screening and appraisal during the "Assess" phase.
  • Apply multi-criteria decision-making to the "Select" phase.
  • Oversee the technical "Front-End Engineering Design" (FEED) in "Define."
  • Develop robust Business Cases and Investment Proposals.
  • Manage the transition between project "Gates" and "Decision Points."
  • Refine cost estimates across the FEL-1, FEL-2, and FEL-3 stages.
  • Implement "Value Improvement Practices" (VIPs) in early phases.
  • Assess "Technology Maturity" and associated project risks.
  • Present conceptual options and trade-offs to senior leadership.
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary teams during the "Pre-Sanction" period.
  • Establish the "Project Execution Plan" (PEP) for the execution phase.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is intended for Project Directors, Business Development Managers, Planning Leads, Engineering Managers, and Portfolio Coordinators.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
