Water Desalination Technologies

19 – 23 Jan. 2026, Abu Dhabi14 – 18 Dec. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course provides a comprehensive and practical understanding of modern water desalination technologies used for municipal, industrial, and oil and gas applications. It covers seawater and brackish water desalination, pretreatment and fouling control, membrane and thermal desalination processes, energy consumption and recovery, operational troubleshooting, water quality monitoring, and integration with utilities and distribution systems. Participants will gain the ability to select appropriate desalination technologies, understand design and performance drivers, and apply best practices to improve reliability, efficiency, and product water quality.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of the course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the drivers for desalination and the key differences between seawater and brackish water applications.
  2. Describe major desalination process families and where each is technically and economically suitable.
  3. Interpret key feedwater quality parameters and how they influence technology selection and pretreatment needs.
  4. Explain the principles of reverse osmosis and the performance factors that govern flux, salt rejection, and recovery.
  5. Describe thermal desalination fundamentals including evaporation, condensation, and scaling control requirements.
  6. Compare energy consumption profiles of membrane and thermal desalination and identify energy reduction opportunities.
  7. Identify pretreatment objectives and select suitable pretreatment trains for different raw water conditions.
  8. Recognize common membrane fouling mechanisms and apply prevention and cleaning strategies.
  9. Interpret operational indicators such as differential pressure, conductivity, silt density index, and normalized permeate flow.
  10. Explain post-treatment requirements including remineralization, disinfection, pH adjustment, and corrosion control.
  11. Evaluate brine management options and environmental considerations for discharge and concentrate handling.
  12. Apply safe operating practices for chemical handling, high pressure systems, and confined space activities.
  13. Troubleshoot typical performance upsets including scaling, biofouling, oxidant damage, and hydraulic instability.
  14. Understand reliability and maintenance requirements for pumps, energy recovery devices, and membrane elements.
  15. Support commissioning and performance testing activities using acceptance criteria and data validation methods.
  16. Establish monitoring plans and key performance indicators to sustain stable desalination operation.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

-Water treatment and utilities engineers working in desalination plants and distribution systems

-Operations and maintenance personnel responsible for RO and thermal desalination units

-Process and project engineers involved in design, upgrade, or optimization of desalination facilities

-HSE personnel supporting chemical safety, environmental compliance, and operational risk control

-Technical staff in oil and gas, power, and industrial facilities using desalinated water for utilities

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and after the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
