Vessels and Reactors: Design and Operation

05 – 09 Jan. 2026, Abu Dhabi23 – 27 Nov. 2026, Sharm El Shaikh

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The course will provide participants with fundamental knowledge of vessels, columns, and reactors and their functions in refinery plants. It will explain how these pieces of equipment fit within refinery process units, how they contribute to separation and reaction operations, and how they are operated safely and efficiently. Participants will gain an understanding of the different types of vessels and columns, their internal components, routine operational activities, and basic troubleshooting and emergency handling related to vessels, columns, and reactors.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the main types of vessels and columns used in refinery plants and explain their functions within key process units.
  2. Describe the purpose, internal components, and basic operating principles of separators, knock out drums, and receivers.
  3. Compare tray towers and packed towers, explaining their internal components, operating characteristics, advantages, and limitations.
  4. Describe routine operational activities associated with vessels and columns, including start up, normal operation, monitoring, and shutdown.
  5. Recognize common operating problems in vessels and columns and apply basic troubleshooting techniques.
  6. Explain the main types of refinery reactors, their internal components, and their role in refinery processes.
  7. Describe routine operational activities associated with reactors, including control of temperature, pressure, flows, and catalyst related parameters at a basic level.
  8. Identify abnormal situations and outline relevant emergency handling actions for vessels, columns, and reactors from an operations perspective.
  9. Coordinate with maintenance, inspection, and safety personnel to support safe, reliable operation of vessels, columns, and reactors.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

-Operations professionals working in refinery process units

-Panel and field operators dealing with vessels, columns, and reactors

-Junior operations engineers and shift engineers assigned to refining operations

-Maintenance and inspection staff who interact with process vessels, columns, and reactors

-Technical supervisory staff overseeing day-to-day refinery operations

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures and discussion sessions, as well as case studies, will be managed to maximize the amount and quality of information, knowledge, and experience transfer. The course will be intensive but practical and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance learning. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and after the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
