Production Planning and Scheduling in Petroleum Refineries

20 – 24 Apr. 2026, Abu Dhabi20 – 24 July 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The course will provide the participants an overview of how to resolve issues of production planning and scheduling in petroleum refineries that are most commonly encountered by refinery personnel working in this area. It will address the link between refinery configuration, crude slate, process unit constraints, tank farm limitations, product quality requirements, and commercial commitments, and how these factors are reflected in medium- and short-term plans and schedules. Practical examples, refinery flow sheets, and planning and scheduling case studies will be used throughout the program.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the role of production planning and scheduling in maximizing refinery profitability and ensuring reliable product supply.
  2. Interpret refinery flow sheets and translate process unit constraints and capacities into planning and scheduling inputs.
  3. Apply basic planning and scheduling concepts to crude receipt, processing, storage, transfer, and shipping operations.
  4. Identify and resolve typical planning and scheduling bottlenecks related to tankage, blending limitations, line-ups, and product movement conflicts.
  5. Apply product blending rules to meet product specifications while minimizing quality giveaway and off-spec production.
  6. Coordinate between operations, planning, maintenance, and supply chain teams to implement feasible and robust production plans and schedules.
  7. Use simple tools and data (rates, inventories, line-ups, nominations) to monitor plan adherence and reschedule in response to upsets and changes.
  8. Define key performance indicators (KPIs) for refinery planning and scheduling and use them to drive continuous improvement.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

-Refinery operations professionals involved in day-to-day running of process units and tank farms

-Production planning and scheduling engineers and coordinators

-Process engineers supporting refinery optimization and debottlenecking

-Supply, shipping, and export coordinators dealing with product nominations and deliveries

-Tank farm, terminal, and product movement supervisors and shift controllers

-New or newly assigned staff to refinery planning, scheduling, or operations support roles

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures and discussion sessions, as well as case studies, will be managed to maximize the amount and quality of information, knowledge, and experience transfer. The course will be intensive but practical and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance learning. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and after the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
