Process Variables in Refinery Plants
| 22 – 26 June 2026, Abu Dhabi | 09 – 13 Nov. 2026, Abu Dhabi |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
This comprehensive course, focusing on Process Variables in Refinery Plants, delves deep into the fundamental process variables that govern the operation of refinery units and how these variables influence product yields and product quality. Participants will learn what key process variables are, how they are defined and measured, and how changes in temperature, pressure, flow, level, and composition impact the performance of major refinery units.
The course explains in simple, practical terms how process variables of units are selected, monitored, and adjusted to meet production targets while maintaining safe and reliable operation. Special emphasis is placed on understanding how process variables impact product yields and how they impact product quality, so that participants can support day to day optimization and troubleshooting. Participants will engage in practical exercises and case studies to apply the concepts learned using simplified refinery examples and operating scenarios.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Define what is meant by process variables and explain their importance in refinery plants.
- Identify the main process variables of typical refinery units such as crude and vacuum units, heaters, and simple treating units at a basic level.
- Explain how changes in key process variables affect product yields in refinery operations.
- Describe how process variables impact product quality parameters and specification compliance.
- Recognize the typical operating ranges and constraints for key variables in basic refinery units.
- Interpret simple trends and operating data for process variables and relate them to unit performance.
- Understand how control loops are used to maintain process variables within their desired ranges.
- Describe the relationship between safe operating limits, alarms, and process variables in refinery plants.
- Support operations in making basic adjustments to process variables to improve yields and maintain quality within guidelines.
- Contributes to discussions on unit performance, product yields, and product quality using process variable concepts and language.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
-Operations Professionals
-Process Engineers
-Junior and Graduate Engineers assigned to refinery units
-Control Room and Field Operators seeking a better understanding of process variables
-Technical Support Staff involved in monitoring refinery unit performance
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures and discussion sessions, as well as case studies, will be managed to maximize the amount and quality of information, knowledge, and experience transfer. The course will be intensive but practical and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance learning. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and after the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
