Optimization and Rehabilitation of Water Treatment Plants

04 – 08 May 2026, Abu Dhabi03 – 07 Aug. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course provides a structured and practical understanding of how to assess, optimize, upgrade, and rehabilitate existing water treatment plants. It covers the full cycle from performance diagnosis and bottleneck identification to process optimization, asset rehabilitation, and long-term improvement planning. Participants will learn how to evaluate hydraulic and process performance, improve energy and chemical efficiency, extend asset life, and align plant operation with current and future regulatory and demand requirements. Emphasis is placed on real case studies, field issues, and practical tools that can be immediately applied in existing facilities.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the main components and process stages of conventional and advanced water treatment plants.
  2. Interpret key water quality parameters and performance indicators relevant to plant optimization.
  3. Conduct structured performance assessments to identify process, hydraulic, and mechanical bottlenecks.
  4. Evaluate the condition of critical assets and define priorities for rehabilitation and replacement.
  5. Analyze the impact of changing raw water quality and demand patterns on existing plant capacity.
  6. Apply best practice methods to optimize coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration.
  7. Identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption and improve pump and blower efficiency.
  8. Optimize chemical dosing strategies to balance cost, performance, and operational robustness.
  9. Develop practical troubleshooting approaches for common process upsets and water quality issues.
  10. Plan and sequence rehabilitation works to minimize downtime and service disruption.
  11. Integrate new technologies and retrofits into existing plants with minimal hydraulic and control impact.
  12. Prepare realistic upgrade options, cost estimates, and business cases for management decision-making.
  13. Establish monitoring, data analysis, and reporting practices that support continuous improvement.
  14. Communicate findings, risks, and rehabilitation plans effectively to plant management, regulators, and stakeholders.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

-Water treatment plant operators, supervisors, and superintendents

-Process and operations engineers responsible for potable and industrial water plants

-Maintenance, reliability, and asset management engineers in utilities and industrial sites

-Design and consulting engineers involved in plant upgrading and optimization projects

-Project managers overseeing rehabilitation and expansion of existing treatment facilities

-Quality, laboratory, and technical support staff monitoring water quality and process performance

-HSE, environmental, and regulatory personnel concerned with treated water compliance

-Any technical staff seeking deeper practical knowledge in optimizing and rehabilitating water treatment plants

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and after the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
