Operating Procedures and Standing Instructions in Petrochemical Operations

06 – 10 Apr. 2026, Dubai06 – 10 July 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This training course aims to equip participants with a solid understanding of Operating Procedures (OPs) and Standing Instructions (SIs) within the context of petrochemical operations engineering. It explains the role of OPs and SIs in controlling day-to-day operations, managing abnormal situations, and ensuring that safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance are maintained.

The course explores how procedures are structured, developed, reviewed, approved, communicated, and used in the field and control room. It also highlights the links between OPs and SIs, process safety management, operational discipline, and incident prevention. Practical examples and simple exercises will help participants connect the concepts to their own plants and roles.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of Operating Procedures (OPs) and Standing Instructions (SIs) in petrochemical operations engineering.
  2. Explain the significance of standardized procedures in ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance with industry regulations and company requirements.
  3. Identify the specific requirements and considerations for developing, implementing, and using OPs and SIs in petrochemical operations.
  4. Understand the importance of adherence to OPs and SIs in maintaining process integrity and preventing incidents and near misses.
  5. Describe how OPs and SIs relate to risk assessments, management of change, and process safety information.
  6. Develop skills to effectively read, follow, and apply OPs and SIs in normal, startup, shutdown, and abnormal operating conditions.
  7. Contribute to the improvement of OPs and SIs by giving feedback, reporting gaps, and participating in reviews.
  8. Recognize common pitfalls in procedure use such as workarounds, short cuts, and outdated instructions and how to address them constructively.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

-Operations engineers in the petrochemical industry

-Plant operators and technicians

-Process safety engineers

-Regulatory compliance officers

-Management personnel responsible for SOP development and implementation in petrochemical plants

-New technical staff who need a structured introduction to operational procedures and instructions

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures and discussion sessions, as well as case studies, will be managed to maximize the amount and quality of information, knowledge, and experience transfer. The course will be intensive but practical and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance learning. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and after the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
