Multistage Flash Desalination: Start-up and Shutdown

11 – 15 May 2026, Abu Dhabi07 – 11 Sep. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course will help participants understand the principles of flash distillation and Multistage Flash (MSF) desalination, and how these are applied in refinery and industrial desalination units. It provides a structured overview of the overall refinery utilities water flow scheme, the role of the desalination unit, design conditions, raw materials, product specifications, and major equipment. The course also explains process variable control in MSF desalination plants, initial startup and shutdown sequences, and the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and handling precautions of chemicals used. Emphasis is placed on safe, efficient operation, correct sequencing during startup and shutdown, and maintaining reliable water production.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the role of designation within refinery utilities systems and the overall water flow scheme.
  2. Describe the basic principles of flash distillation and Multistage Flash (MSF) desalination.
  3. Identify the design conditions, raw materials, and product water specifications for MSF units.
  4. Describe the main process steps and major equipment of an MSF desalination plant.
  5. Explain the key process variables in MSF operation and how they are monitored and controlled.
  6. Recognize corrosion, scale formation, and fouling mechanisms and describe basic control strategies.
  7. Follow and support initial MSF unit startup and shutdown sequences in line with standard operating procedures.
  8. Interpret operation trends and plant information to detect deviations and take corrective actions.
  9. Understand the purpose and content of MSDS for chemicals used in MSF units and apply correct handling precautions.
  10. Contribute to safe, reliable and efficient operation of MSF desalination plants in refinery and industrial environments.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

-Operations professionals working in utilities and water treatment

-Desalination and water plant operators and panel operators

-Field operators assigned to MSF and associated utility units

-Operations engineers supporting utilities and water systems

-Maintenance and reliability technicians dealing with MSF equipment

-Technical staff and new joiners who need an understanding of MSF startup, shutdown and control

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures and discussion sessions, as well as case studies, will be managed to maximize the amount and quality of information, knowledge, and experience transfer. The course will be intensive but practical and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance learning. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and after the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
