Kerosene Treatment Unit (Merox) Startup, Shutdown, Normal Operations and Troubleshooting

23 – 27 Mar. 2026, Cairo20 – 24 July 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This advanced course provides in depth knowledge and practical skills for operating, monitoring, and troubleshooting Kerosene Treatment Unit (Merox) systems. Participants will review Merox process principles, reactions, and the chemistry and kinetics of sulfur removal, then move into detailed coverage of process flow, key equipment, and critical operating variables. The course focuses on real world operation of Kerosene Merox units, including startup, shutdown, and transition states, interpretation of unit logics and protections, and systematic troubleshooting of typical operating problems. By the end of the course, participants will be able to operate the unit safely and efficiently, respond effectively to upsets, and contribute to improved reliability and product quality.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Provide an overview of Merox processes and their role in kerosene treatment within the refinery.
  2. Explain Merox reactions and process principles, with emphasis on sulfur removal mechanisms.
  3. Describe the chemistry and kinetics of sulfur removal and how these affect unit performance and product quality.
  4. Describe the implications of process variable changes and their effect on Merox unit performance, efficiency, and operating margins.
  5. Explain the catalyst chemistry used in Merox treatment and its effect on activity, selectivity, and stability.
  6. Monitor Kerosene Treatment Unit (Merox) operations, interpret trends in key process variables, and identify abnormal conditions.
  7. Conduct startup and shutdown activities for the Kerosene Merox unit in accordance with standard operating procedures and unit logics.
  8. Interpret the logics related to Kerosene Treatment Unit (Merox) operation, including trips, interlocks, and permissives.
  9. Troubleshoot typical operating problems in the Kerosene Treatment Unit (Merox) system and take necessary corrective actions for operational issues.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

-Panel and field operators responsible for Kerosene Merox units

-Operation engineers working on kerosene treatment and light product units

-Senior operators and shift supervisors involved in startup, shutdown, and upset handling

-Control room staff monitoring Merox units and associated systems

-Maintenance and reliability personnel closely supporting Merox equipment

-Technical staff transitioning into advanced operations roles in refining units

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures and discussion sessions, as well as case studies, will be managed to maximize the amount and quality of information, knowledge, and experience transfer. The course will be intensive but practical and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance learning. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and after the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
