Hydrotreating System Design

15 – 19 June 2026, Abu Dhabi02 – 06 Nov. 2026, Cairo

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This comprehensive course provides in-depth coverage of hydrotreating system design, with a focus on interpreting, reviewing, and enhancing design specifications for hydrotreating units in modern refineries. Participants will explore process fundamentals, feed and product requirements, unit configuration, reactor and separator design, hydrogen and utility systems, as well as safety, operability, and reliability aspects. Emphasis is placed on linking process design decisions to equipment selection, operating windows, and long-term performance. Practical examples, calculations, and case studies will help participants apply hydrotreating system design concepts to real world refinery projects and revamps.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the role of hydrotreating units in the refinery scheme and their impact on product quality and environmental compliance.
  2. Interpret and critically review process design basis documents, process flow diagrams, and P and IDs for hydrotreating systems.
  3. Describe key hydrotreating reactions, contaminants to be removed, and how these influence process conditions and design margins.
  4. Define major hydrotreating unit hardware (reactors, separators, heat exchangers, fractionators, compressors, and pumps) and their design considerations.
  5. Evaluate key design parameters such as temperature, pressure, space velocity, hydrogen to oil ratio, and recycle gas purity, and relate them to catalyst performance and equipment sizing.
  6. Assess design provisions for startup, shutdown, catalyst loading and unloading, and turnarounds to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  7. Identify typical design weaknesses that lead to bottlenecks, poor reliability, or product quality issues and propose improvement options.
  8. Apply structured methodologies to review, optimize, and troubleshoot hydrotreating system designs using case studies and real project examples.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

-Process and design engineers

-Operations engineers

-Control and instrumentation engineers

-Maintenance and reliability engineers

-Senior panel and field operators

-Technical support staff and project engineers

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures and discussion sessions, as well as case studies, will be managed to maximize the amount and quality of information, knowledge, and experience transfer. The course will be intensive but practical and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance learning. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and after the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
