Hydrocracker and Base Oil Process Design

13 – 17 Apr. 2026, Abu Dhabi07 – 11 Sep. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This comprehensive course on Hydrocracker and Base Oil Design focuses on interpreting, reviewing and enhancing design specifications for hydrocracking units and associated base oil production systems. Participants will explore how feedstock properties, catalyst systems, reactor configuration, fractionation schemes and product quality requirements drive the overall process and equipment design. The course covers hydrocracker reactor and recycles loop design, high pressure equipment considerations, product fractionation, lube base stock production schemes and integration with the wider refinery configuration. Emphasis is placed on balancing conversion, selectivity, energy efficiency, reliability and safety. Practical exercises and case studies will enable participants to review design concepts, assess existing units and contribute effectively to revamp and optimization projects.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the key principles, terminology and process configurations associated with hydrocracking units and base oil production systems.
  2. Interpret and review hydrocracker and base oil design documentation, including process flow diagrams, heat and material balances, reactor and fractionation specifications and key equipment datasheets.
  3. Apply practical design concepts for hydrocracker reactors, recycle gas systems, high-pressure loops, main fractionators and base oil processing units to meet performance and product quality targets.
  4. Develop strategies for effective hydrocracker and base oil design implementation, considering safety, operability, reliability, energy efficiency and environmental performance.
  5. Identify typical design constraints and deficiencies in hydrocracking and base oil schemes and propose practical revamp, debottlenecking and optimization options.
  6. Understand the latest industry trends and best practices in hydrocracker and base oil design, including catalyst developments, high-severity operation, lube base stock quality improvements and integration with refinery and petrochemical value chains.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

-Process engineers

-Design and project engineers

-Operations engineers and senior panel operators

-Planning, optimization and technology engineers

-Mechanical, reliability and inspection engineers

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures and discussion sessions, as well as case studies, will be managed to maximize the amount and quality of information, knowledge, and experience transfer. The course will be intensive but practical and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance learning. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and after the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
