Critical Equipment and System Overrides: Governance and Safety
| 26 – 30 Jan. 2026, Abu Dhabi | 19 – 23 Oct. 2026, Abu Dhabi |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
This comprehensive course on Critical Equipment and System Override provides participants with a structured understanding of how, when, and under what conditions overrides may be applied to safety critical systems and equipment. The course covers the full lifecycle of overrides, including governance, procedures, risk assessment, implementation, monitoring, and close out. Particular emphasis is placed on knowing and applying the procedure for the control of overrides, safely implementing overrides in control and safeguarding systems, and completing all relevant documentation and communication. Participants will engage in practical exercises and case studies to apply the concepts learned to realistic operational scenarios.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

- Describe typical reasons for implementing overrides and the associated risks if they are poorly controlled.
- Interpret and apply their organization’s procedure for controlling overrides, including roles, responsibilities, and approval requirements.
- Conduct and document risk assessments for proposed overrides, including identifying hazards, consequences, and compensating safeguards.
- Plan and implement overrides safely in control systems, safeguarding systems, and field devices while maintaining barrier integrity as far as practicable.
- Monitor active overrides, apply temporary risk reduction measures, and ensure effective communication between operations, maintenance, and safety teams.
- Complete all required documentation for the initiation, maintenance, and removal of overrides, including override registers and logbooks.
- Integrate override management with permit to work, management of change, and shutdown or start up planning processes.
- Analyze real incidents and near misses where overrides were a contributing factor and extract lessons learned and good practices.
- Develop strategies and key performance indicators to improve override discipline and strengthen the culture of safe operation.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
-Operations engineers and panel or console operators.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures and discussion sessions, as well as case studies, will be managed to maximize the amount and quality of information, knowledge, and experience transfer. The course will be intensive but practical and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance learning. Course material through PowerPoint equipped with necessary animation, learning videos, and general discussions will be provided.
