Classification of Hydrocarbons and Analytical Techniques

04 – 08 May 2026, Abu Dhabi03 – 07 Aug. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The course will provide the participants with an overview of the classification of hydrocarbons and the analytical techniques used to characterize them in process and refinery environments. It introduces how hydrocarbons are grouped by structure and properties, how these groups influence behavior in process units and products, and how analytical methods are selected and applied to quantify and track these species. The course also addresses limitations of common analytical techniques and demonstrates how results are used in practical applications such as process optimization, product quality control, and environmental compliance.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the main classes of hydrocarbons and their key structural and physical characteristics.
  2. Explain how hydrocarbon classification relates to process behavior and product properties.
  3. Identify the principal analytical techniques used to characterize hydrocarbons in gases and liquids.
  4. Select appropriate analytical methods for different hydrocarbon streams and measurement objectives.
  5. Recognize the limitations, uncertainties, and potential interferences associated with common analytical techniques.
  6. Interpret typical hydrocarbon analysis reports and link results to process and product performance.
  7. Apply analytical data in simple process engineering applications such as unit monitoring, troubleshooting, and product quality control.
  8. Understand how analytical information supports environmental and regulatory reporting related to hydrocarbon streams.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

-Process Engineers

-Refinery and Petrochemical Engineers

-Operations and Production Engineers

-Laboratory Liaison Engineers and Technical Support Staff

-Process Development and Optimization Engineers

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures and discussion sessions, as well as case studies, will be managed to maximize the amount and quality of information, knowledge, and experience transfer. The course will be intensive but practical and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance learning. Course material through PowerPoint equipped with necessary animation, learning videos, and general discussions will be provided.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
