Aspen Plus for Process Simulation and Debottlenecking

02 – 06 Feb. 2026, Abu Dhabi06 – 10 July 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Aspen Plus is a market-leading process simulation software used for the conceptual design, optimization, and performance monitoring of chemical and petrochemical processes. This course provides an in-depth exploration of the software’s capabilities, focusing on the rigorous modeling of steady-state processes using complex physical property methods. Participants will learn how to build high-fidelity models that accurately reflect the behavior of real-world chemical systems, enabling them to evaluate design changes before implementation.

The scope of this training extends beyond basic flowsheet construction to include advanced debottlenecking strategies for existing industrial units. Attendees will explore the use of Sensitivity Analysis, Design Specs, and Optimization tools to identify capacity constraints and improve energy efficiency. The course emphasizes the importance of selecting appropriate thermodynamic property packages, as these form the mathematical foundation for accurate mass and energy balances in distillation, reaction, and heat exchange systems.

A significant focus is placed on the practical application of simulation results to solve industrial production challenges. By learning how to calibrate models against plant data, engineers can pinpoint equipment limitations in pumps, compressors, and columns. The curriculum provides a structured approach to identifying "bottlenecks" in a process and evaluates the technical feasibility of hardware upgrades or parameter adjustments to increase throughput and profitability.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Navigate the Aspen Plus environment and utilize the Model Palette for flowsheet development.
  2. Select and validate the most appropriate thermodynamic property methods for different chemical systems.
  3. Build and converge complex process flowsheets involving recycle streams and heat integration.
  4. Utilize Design Specs to automate the calculation of process variables to meet specific targets.
  5. Perform Sensitivity Analysis to understand the impact of independent variables on process performance.
  6. Model various reactor types including stoichiometric, kinetic, and equilibrium reactors.
  7. Set up rigorous distillation models using RadFrac for multi-component separation.
  8. Conduct hydraulic analysis for trays and packing to identify column flooding limits.
  9. Evaluate heat exchanger performance and identify constraints in utility consumption.
  10. Use the Aspen Plus Optimizer to maximize profit or minimize energy use within process constraints.
  11. Calibrate simulation models using plant measurements to ensure high-fidelity debottlenecking.
  12. Identify equipment bottlenecks in rotating machinery such as compressors and pumps.
  13. Generate comprehensive technical reports and stream summaries for engineering documentation.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Process Engineers, Design Engineers, Chemical Engineers, and Technical Consultants involved in process optimization and plant debottlenecking.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
