Ship Security Officer (SSO) Fundamentals

22 – 26 June 2026, Abu Dhabi12 – 16 Oct. 2026, Cairo

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Ship Security Officer (SSO) Fundamentals is a specialized training program designed to meet the mandatory requirements of the STCW Convention and the ISPS Code. This course examines the critical role of the SSO as the primary person responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the Ship Security Plan (SSP). It provides a technical framework for managing security risks, conducting internal audits, and ensuring the crew is prepared to respond to a variety of maritime security threats.

The scope of this training involves the mastery of "Security Assessments," the management of restricted areas, and the coordination of security activities with Company and Port Facility Security Officers. Participants will explore the mechanics of "Access Control," the utilization of security equipment such as AIS and SSAS, and the protocols for conducting systematic searches for prohibited items. The program emphasizes the leadership required to foster a "Security Culture" on board and the administrative discipline needed to maintain accurate security records.

Coverage includes the legal mandates of the IMO, the response to piracy and armed robbery, and the management of "Cybersecurity" within the vessel's operational technology. The course addresses the nuances of "Security Drills and Exercises," focusing on realistic scenario planning and after-action reviews. By focusing on both regulatory compliance and tactical readiness, this course equips senior officers with the expertise needed to safeguard the vessel, its cargo, and its personnel in an increasingly complex global environment.
