Offshore Rig Move Management: Considerations and Procedures

09 – 13 Feb. 2026, Abu Dhabi10 – 14 Aug. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Offshore Rig Move Management is a high-level technical course focused on the logistics, engineering, and marine operations involved in relocating mobile offshore units (MOUs). This course examines the complexities of moving Jack-up rigs, Semi-submersibles, and Drillships, focusing on the transition between the "Stationary" and "Underway" modes. It provides a detailed analysis of the stability requirements, mooring analysis, and towing configurations necessary for a safe and efficient relocation.

The scope of this training involves the coordination of multi-vessel operations, including Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels and harbor tugs. Participants will explore the technicalities of "Pre-Move" surveys, subsea hazard identification, and the engineering of sea-fastening for rig equipment. The program emphasizes the role of the "Rig Move Master" or "Tow Master" in leading the operational team and managing the critical communication link between the rig and the support fleet.

Coverage includes the regulatory requirements of the IMO and Class Societies, the management of "Weather Windows," and the technicalities of "Jack-up" leg soil penetration analysis. The course addresses the emergency procedures for towline breakage, unexpected weather deterioration, and loss of stability. By blending naval architecture principles with heavy-marine logistics, this course equips professionals with the expertise needed to manage one of the most high-risk activities in the offshore oil and gas industry.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Define the roles and responsibilities of the Rig Move Team.
  2. Develop a comprehensive Rig Move Plan (RMP) for different rig types.
  3. Conduct stability calculations for rigs in transit and "Survival" modes.
  4. Execute "Pre-Move" site surveys and subsea hazard assessments.
  5. Manage the deployment and recovery of complex mooring systems.
  6. Coordinate the operations of AHTS vessels during towing and anchoring.
  7. Analyze "Soil Data" and "Leg Penetration" for Jack-up rig positioning.
  8. Oversee the sea-fastening and securing of all rig-based equipment.
  9. Manage the risk of "Punch-Through" during Jack-up leg loading.
  10. Implement "Collision Avoidance" measures during transit through busy fields.
  11. Utilize weather forecasting data to determine safe "Move Windows."
  12. Lead the emergency response for towline failure or propulsion loss.
  13. Audit rig move operations for compliance with IMCA and Class standards.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Rig Managers, Barge Masters, Tow Masters, AHTS Captains, Offshore Superintendents, and Marine Consultants.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
