COURSE OVERVIEW:
The Introduction to Ships, Shipping Markets, and Maritime Stakeholders course is a foundational program designed to provide a bird's-eye view of the global maritime industry. This course examines the various types of merchant vessels, the economic drivers of the shipping markets, and the complex web of organizations that regulate and support international trade. It provides a clear understanding of how the "invisible engine" of shipping facilitates 90% of global commerce.
The scope of this training involves the classification of ships by cargo type, including bulk carriers, tankers, container ships, and specialized vessels. Participants will explore the four shipping markets: the freight market, the sale and purchase market, the newbuilding market, and the demolition market. The program emphasizes the roles of key stakeholders, such as shipowners, charterers, shipbrokers, classification societies, and port authorities, explaining how they interact to move goods across oceans.
Coverage includes the basic geography of major trade routes and chokepoints, the principles of supply and demand in shipping, and the regulatory influence of the IMO and flag states.
