International Conventions and Treaties Related to Seafaring Work, Certificates and Contracts
| 22 – 26 June 2026, Abu Dhabi | 14 – 18 Sep. 2026, Dubai |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
The International Conventions and Treaties Related to Seafaring Work, Certificates and Contracts course is a vital regulatory program designed to clarify the legal framework governing the global maritime workforce. This course examines the primary pillars of international maritime law, specifically focusing on how treaties created by the International Maritime Organization and the International Labour Organization protect the rights and define the obligations of seafarers. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the legal journey from initial certification to the execution of employment agreements.
The scope of this training involves a detailed study of the STCW Convention regarding training and certification, and the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) concerning working and living conditions. Participants will explore the technicalities of Seafarer Employment Agreements (SEA), the recognition of certificates across different jurisdictions, and the minimum standards for manning levels on various vessel types. The program emphasizes the practical application of these laws in preventing labor disputes and ensuring that all crew members are legally qualified for their designated roles.
Coverage includes the documentation required for flag state compliance, the legal implications of contract termination, and the rights of seafarers regarding repatriation and medical care. The course addresses the role of Port State Control in verifying crew certificates and contract validity during inspections. By bridging the gap between high-level international treaties and daily maritime administration, this course equips participants with the expertise to manage seafaring personnel within the strict boundaries of global maritime law.
