Dangerous Goods Handling and Segregation (Port and Vessel)

13 – 17 Apr. 2026, Dubai10 – 14 Aug. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The Dangerous Goods Handling and Segregation (Port and Vessel) course is a critical safety program focused on the complexities of transporting hazardous materials across the global supply chain. This course examines the legal and operational requirements for managing substances that pose a risk to health, safety, property, or the environment. It provides a thorough understanding of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code, which is the governing framework for the safe carriage of dangerous goods by sea.

The scope of this training involves the identification, classification, and labeling of hazardous materials as they move between port terminals and vessel decks. Participants will explore the nine classes of dangerous goods—ranging from explosives and flammable liquids to toxic and radioactive substances and the specific hazards associated with each. The program emphasizes the practical application of segregation tables to ensure that incompatible materials are never stored or stowed in proximity, thereby preventing catastrophic chemical reactions, fires, or explosions.

Coverage includes the documentation trail required for compliance, including the Dangerous Goods Declaration and the Container Packing Certificate. The course also addresses the unique challenges of port-side storage, where high volumes of diverse cargoes must be managed within limited space. By focusing on both shipboard stowage and shore-based terminal operations, this course equips maritime professionals with the expertise to implement rigorous safety protocols that protect crews, port workers, and the marine ecosystem.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Classify hazardous materials according to the nine IMDG hazard classes.
  2. Identify Proper Shipping Names (PSN) and UN Numbers for various substances.
  3. Interpret the Dangerous Goods List for specific transport requirements.
  4. Apply the General Segregation Table for both port and vessel scenarios.
  5. Validate the accuracy of Dangerous Goods Declarations and transport documents.
  6. Recognize and inspect hazard labels, placards, and marks for compliance.
  7. Implement safe handling procedures for Limited Quantities and Excepted Quantities.
  8. Manage the emergency response procedures (EmS) for spills and fires.
  9. Utilize the Medical First Aid Guide (MFAG) for chemical exposure incidents.
  10. Oversee the safe stuffing and securing of dangerous goods in containers.
  11. Audit port storage areas for correct segregation of incompatible chemicals.
  12. Coordinate with port authorities for the reporting of hazardous cargo arrivals.
  13. Execute risk assessments for the loading and unloading of dangerous cargoes.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Port Operations Supervisors, Ship Officers, Deck Crew, Warehouse Managers, Cargo Surveyors, and HSE Officers.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:
