Wellsite Geologist Operations and Geological Activity in Exploration
| 20 – 24 Apr. 2026, Abu Dhabi | 17 – 21 Aug. 2026, Dubai |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
Wellsite Geologist Operations and Geological Activity in Exploration is a practical program designed to define the role of the geologist at the center of drilling operations. As the "eyes" of the exploration team on the rig, the wellsite geologist is responsible for ensuring that the well stays on its geological target and that all relevant data—from rock cuttings to gas readings—is accurately captured and interpreted. This course provides a technical toolkit for managing geological operations in real-time.
The scope of this training includes the study of lithology description, hydrocarbon shows evaluation, and the coordination of mud logging and wireline services. Participants will learn how to create accurate mud logs, supervise coring operations, and identify formation tops while drilling. The curriculum emphasizes the communication between the rig site and the office, teaching attendees how to provide the critical information needed to make "geosteering" decisions and "pick" casing points.
Coverage also extends to the management of geological risks, such as unexpected pressure changes or lost circulation. Attendees will explore the basics of pore pressure prediction and how to interpret gas chromatography data to identify fluid contacts. By focusing on the integration of geological observation with drilling reality, this course ensures that participants can maximize the data value of every exploration and appraisal well.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Define the roles and responsibilities of the Wellsite Geologist.
- Perform detailed lithological descriptions of drill cuttings and cores.
- Evaluate hydrocarbon shows using fluorescence and cut analysis.
- Supervise mud logging units and verify data quality.
- Identify formation tops and geological markers in real-time.
- Coordinate coring operations and ensure high recovery rates.
- Interpret gas-while-drilling (GWD) data for fluid identification.
- Collaborate with the drilling team for casing seat selection.
- Monitor pore pressure trends and assist in geopressure detection.
- Prepare comprehensive daily geological reports and final well reports.
- Utilize LWD (Logging While Drilling) data for geosteering.
- Manage geological data workflows from the rig to the asset team.
- Understand the safety requirements for working on a drilling rig.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Junior Geologists, Mud Loggers, Exploration Technicians, and Petroleum Engineers moving into geological operations.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
