Well Control and Blowout Prevention for Drilling and Production

18 – 22 May 2026, Abu Dhabi12 – 16 Oct. 2026, Dubai

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Well Control is the most critical technical skill in the oilfield, protecting lives, the environment, and multi-billion dollar assets. This course provides a rigorous foundation in the detection and mitigation of wellbore "kicks" and the prevention of uncontrolled blowouts. Participants will explore the physics of pressure (Hydrostatic, Pore, and Fracture) and how to maintain the "Primary Barrier" of fluid density.

The curriculum covers the mechanics of the "Secondary Barrier” the Blowout Preventer (BOP) stack and its associated control systems. Attendees will master the mathematical workflows for the "Driller's Method" and the "Wait and Weight" method of well killing. The course also addresses specific challenges in deepwater, high-pressure/high-temperature (HPHT) environments, and production well interventions.

By the end of the program, drilling and production professionals will be able to recognize early warning signs of kicks, perform accurate kill calculations, and lead a team through the safe and successful recovery of a well under pressure.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Explain the fundamental principles of Well Control and Barriers.
  • Understand Pore Pressure, Fracture Gradient, and the Drilling Window.
  • Monitor and maintain Hydrostatic Pressure using mud weight.
  • Identify primary and secondary "Kick Warning Signs."
  • Perform a "Shut-in" procedure (Hard vs. Soft).
  • Calculate Kill Mud Weight and Initial/Final Circulating Pressures.
  • Execute the "Driller’s Method" for well killing.
  • Execute the "Wait and Weight" method for well killing.
  • Operate and maintain BOP components (Annular, Rams).
  • Understand the mechanics of Choke and Kill Manifolds.
  • Manage Well Control in Deepwater and HPHT environments.
  • Differentiate Well Control in Drilling vs. Production Interventions.
  • Lead a team during a Well Control crisis with clear communication.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Drilling Engineers, Production Engineers, Rig Supervisors, and Well Site Managers.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
