Tank Farm Operations, Vapor Control, and Loss Prevention

27 Apr. – 01 May 2026, Abu Dhabi21 – 25 Sep. 2026, Dubai

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Tank farms are critical nodes in the oil and gas supply chain, where vast quantities of products are stored, blended, and transferred. This course provides a comprehensive guide to the safe and efficient operation of storage terminals. Participants will explore the technical design of various tank types (Fixed roof, Floating roof) and the mechanical systems that support them, including gauging, heating, and mixing.

The curriculum places a heavy emphasis on "Loss Prevention” both physical losses (leaks/spills) and "invisible" losses (vapor emissions). Attendees will learn about Vapor Recovery Units (VRU), tank blanketing, and the calculation of "Evaporative Loss." The course also addresses the high-risk activities of tank cleaning, inspection, and the management of "sludge" and NORM.

By the end of the program, terminal managers and operators will be able to optimize tank utilization, comply with environmental emission standards, and implement rigorous safety protocols that prevent fire, explosion, and environmental contamination.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Describe the various types of storage tanks and their applications.
  • Understand the mechanical components of Fixed and Floating roof tanks.
  • Manage tank gauging systems (Radar, Servo) for inventory accuracy.
  • Identify and mitigate the risks of fire and explosion in tank farms.
  • Calculate evaporative losses using API standards.
  • Design and operate Vapor Recovery Units (VRU) and Blanketing systems.
  • Implement effective "Loss Prevention" strategies for terminals.
  • Manage tank cleaning, degassing, and sludge disposal safely.
  • Conduct tank inspections according to API 653 standards.
  • Design and maintain secondary containment (Bunds/Dykes).
  • Manage the logistics of blending, heating, and pumping operations.
  • Understand the impact of static electricity and lightning on tanks.
  • Formulate an emergency response plan for tank farm incidents.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Terminal Managers, Tank Farm Operators, Safety Officers, and Maintenance Engineers.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
