Sour Service Operations: H2S Handling and Material Selection

13 – 17 Apr. 2026, Abu Dhabi07 – 11 Sep. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Operating in "Sour" environments containing Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) presents extreme risks to personnel safety and equipment integrity. This course provides a comprehensive technical guide to managing sour fields. Participants will explore the chemical nature of H2S and its lethal effects at low concentrations, alongside the devastating impact it has on metals through Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) and Hydrogen-Induced Cracking (HIC).

The curriculum focuses on the NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 standards for material selection. Attendees will learn how to select Metallurgy (CRAs), Elastomers, and Chemicals that can withstand sour conditions without catastrophic failure. The course also details the operational requirements for H2S safety, including detection systems, respiratory protection (SCBA), and emergency response protocols.

By the end of the program, engineers, safety professionals, and operations supervisors will be able to design and run sour service assets that meet the highest standards of integrity and safety, protecting both the workforce and the environment from the "silent killer."

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Define the physical and chemical properties of H2S.
  • Assess the toxicity and safety risks associated with various H2S concentrations.
  • Explain the mechanisms of SSC, HIC, and SOHIC corrosion.
  • Apply NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 standards for material selection.
  • Select appropriate Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRAs) for sour service.
  • Identify the impact of H2S on elastomers and non-metallic seals.
  • Design and maintain H2S detection and alarm systems.
  • Select and operate Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and escape sets.
  • Implement "Sour Service" drilling and completion protocols.
  • Manage the specific challenges of H2S in surface processing and pipelines.
  • Develop H2S Contingency Plans and Emergency Response procedures.
  • Audit field operations for H2S compliance and safety excellence.
  • Conduct risk assessments for H2S releases and dispersion modeling.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Production Engineers, Integrity Engineers, HSE Managers, and Field Supervisors working in sour fields.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
