Chemical Selection, Testing, and Laboratory Qualification
| 08 – 12 June 2026, Abu Dhabi | 26 – 30 Oct. 2026, Sharm El Shaikh |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
Chemical Selection, Testing, and Laboratory Qualification is a critical program focused on the rigorous process of identifying and validating chemical solutions for oilfield challenges. In an industry where chemical spend represents a significant portion of operating expenses, selecting the right product is not merely a technical requirement but a financial imperative. This course provides a structured methodology for navigating the transition from identifying a field problem to implementing a qualified chemical solution that is both effective and compatible with the existing system.
The scope of this training covers the design and execution of laboratory test protocols that accurately simulate field conditions. Participants will explore the nuances of "representative" testing, learning how to account for variables such as shear rates, system pressures, and the presence of specific ions in produced water. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of standardized testing procedures, such as those published by NACE and ASTM, to ensure that results are reproducible and that comparisons between competing products are technically sound and unbiased.
Coverage also includes the qualification process for chemical vendors and the establishment of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for ongoing chemical programs. Attendees will learn how to audit laboratory results, interpret complex analytical data, and manage the transition from laboratory "bottle tests" to full-scale field trials. By the end of the course, participants will possess the expertise to manage chemical tenders effectively, ensuring that every product selected for the asset has been thoroughly vetted for performance, safety, and long-term stability.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Outline the systematic workflow for oilfield chemical selection and procurement.
- Design laboratory test matrices that reflect specific field temperatures and pressures.
- Evaluate the performance of corrosion inhibitors using rotating cylinder electrode (RCE) tests.
- Interpret the results of dynamic scale loop (DSL) tests for inhibitor qualification.
- Analyze the effectiveness of demulsifiers through standardized bottle testing protocols.
- Differentiate between "fit-for-purpose" products and generic chemical formulations.
- Assess the compatibility of new chemicals with existing infrastructure and fluids.
- Perform quality assurance audits on third-party laboratory data and reports.
- Develop Technical Data Sheets (TDS) and performance specifications for chemical tenders.
- Manage the risks associated with scaling up from laboratory results to field application.
- Establish baseline KPIs for monitoring the effectiveness of qualified chemicals.
- Evaluate the environmental impact and toxicity levels of candidate chemicals.
- Implement a structured management of change (MOC) process for chemical transitions.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Production Chemists, Laboratory Supervisors, Chemical Engineers, Procurement Specialists, and Asset Managers involved in chemical treatment programs.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
