The Layout of Piping Systems and Process Equipment

15 – 19 June 2026, Abu Dhabi05 – 09 Oct. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The layout of piping systems and process equipment is a foundational discipline in plant design that directly influences construction costs, operational safety, and maintenance accessibility. This course provides an in-depth exploration of the spatial arrangement of mechanical assets, focusing on the optimization of plot plans and the logical routing of interconnecting pipes. Participants will examine how to balance the rigid requirements of process flow diagrams with the physical constraints of a brownfield or greenfield site.

The scope of this training encompasses the integration of various equipment types, including pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and rotating machinery, within a coherent plant architecture. We will investigate the critical importance of piping flexibility, support design, and the management of thermal expansion to prevent structural failures. The curriculum covers the application of international codes such as ASME B31.3, ensuring that layouts not only meet process needs but also comply with stringent safety and environmental regulations regarding hazardous fluid containment.

Coverage also includes the use of modern three-dimensional modelling tools and the coordination required between multidisciplinary teams to avoid physical clashes. By focusing on ergonomic design and the strategic placement of valves and instruments, the course ensures that the final layout facilitates efficient operations and rapid emergency response. Through this detailed study, attendants will gain the expertise necessary to develop plot plans that minimize pressure drops and maximize the lifecycle value of the industrial facility.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Interpret Plot Plans and Equipment Arrangement Drawings for complex industrial facilities.
  2. Apply the fundamental principles of piping design as per ASME B31.3 standards.
  3. Optimise the placement of process equipment to minimize piping lengths and pressure losses.
  4. Design efficient pipe rack systems for multi-tier plant configurations.
  5. Account for maintenance clearances and crane access in equipment positioning.
  6. Evaluate the impact of thermal expansion on piping layout and support selection.
  7. Implement safety distance requirements in accordance with fire protection codes.
  8. Coordinate piping routes to avoid interference with electrical and instrumentation trays.
  9. Select appropriate piping supports and hangers based on static and dynamic loads.
  10. Design ergonomic access platforms and ladders for valve and instrument operation.
  11. Integrate pump and compressor piping to ensure laminar flow and prevent cavitation.
  12. Manage the transition from Process Flow Diagrams to physical 3D piping models.
  13. Conduct comprehensive layout reviews for constructability and operational safety.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is designed for Piping Designers, Mechanical Engineers, Plant Layout Engineers, Project Engineers, and Draftsmen involved in industrial plant design and modification.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
