Shutdown Management in Oil and Gas Operations: Executing Turnaround Activities

11 – 15 May 2026, Sharm El Shaikh05 – 09 Oct. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The fundamental meaning of this course is the technical and strategic coordination of high-stakes maintenance events within the volatile environment of oil and gas processing. Shutdowns and Turnarounds (STOs) represent the most significant period of risk and expenditure for any refinery or upstream facility, requiring a specialized management framework to ensure that safety and mechanical integrity are maintained. This course focuses on the "Execution Phase," where thousands of tasks must be synchronized within a fixed time window to minimize production loss.

The scope of this training involves the integration of logistics, specialized contractor management, and rigorous safety protocols such as "LOTO" (Lock-Out Tag-Out) and "Confined Space Entry." Participants will explore the critical path of a turnaround, from the initial "Oil-to-Oil" planning phase to the final equipment startup procedures. The curriculum emphasizes the technical management of "Discovery Work," where unexpected equipment damage found during inspection must be rapidly assessed and repaired without destabilizing the overall project schedule.

Coverage includes the use of digital tools for real-time progress tracking, the management of heavy lift operations, and the implementation of "Flawless Startup" programs. Attendees will examine the financial controls required to manage multimillion-dollar budgets and the leadership skills necessary to manage a diverse, temporary workforce. By the end of this program, participants will be able to lead a turnaround execution team that delivers a safe, on-time, and on-budget restart of complex process units.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Define the unique strategic and safety challenges of oil and gas shutdowns.
  • Implement a "Work Breakdown Structure" (WBS) specifically for turnaround execution.
  • Manage "Critical Path" activities using advanced scheduling software and logic.
  • Conduct high-risk "Simultaneous Operations" (SIMOPS) without safety incidents.
  • Establish a "Turnaround Command Center" for real-time decision-making.
  • Utilize "Earned Value Management" (EVM) to track execution progress and costs.
  • Manage "Discovery Work" through a formalized risk and impact assessment process.
  • Implement a "Joint Integrity" and "Flange Management" program to prevent leaks.
  • Coordinate "Heavy Lift" and specialized crane operations within congested units.
  • Manage "Contractor Productivity" and safety compliance during peak activity.
  • Execute a "Flawless Startup" through rigorous "Pre-Startup Safety Reviews" (PSSR).
  • Document "Lessons Learned" to improve the performance of future shutdown cycles.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is designed for Shutdown Managers, Turnaround Planners, Maintenance Engineers, Operations Leads, and Senior Project Coordinators.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
