Practical Shutdown and Turnaround Management for Engineers and Managers

22 – 26 June 2026, Abu Dhabi12 – 16 Oct. 2026, Cairo

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The primary meaning of this course is the strategic and tactical management of high-stakes maintenance events, commonly known as Turnarounds, Shutdowns, and Outages (STO). These events represent the single largest maintenance expense and the greatest period of operational risk for any industrial facility. This course focuses on the "STO Excellence" framework, which balances the conflicting pressures of minimizing downtime, controlling massive budgets, and ensuring zero safety incidents during peak activity.

The scope of this training involves the entire STO lifecycle, moving through the critical phases of Long-Range Planning, Detailed Scoping, Execution, and Post-Turnaround Review. Participants will examine the "Work Selection" process to prevent "Scope Creep" and learn how to utilize "Critical Path Method" (CPM) scheduling to manage thousands of simultaneous tasks. The curriculum emphasizes the leadership and organizational structure required to manage a diverse workforce of internal staff and hundreds of third-party contractors within a compressed timeframe.

Coverage includes the management of "Long-Lead" materials, the development of "Shift Handover" protocols, and the application of "Earned Value Management" (EVM) to track progress in real-time. Attendees will explore specific techniques for "Pre-Outage" work optimization and the technical management of "Discovery Work" that emerges once equipment is opened. By the end of this course, participants will be able to lead an integrated STO team that delivers predictable results, improves asset integrity, and maintains the financial health of the organization.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Define the "STO Lifecycle" phases and the critical "Milestone" dates.
  • Implement a rigorous "Work Selection" process to eliminate non-essential scope.
  • Develop a "Detailed Schedule" using Critical Path Method (CPM) techniques.
  • Manage the "Contractor Prequalification" and mobilization process.
  • Establish a "Turnaround Organization" with clear roles and responsibilities.
  • Utilize "Earned Value Management" (EVM) to track daily progress and spend.
  • Design a "Quality Assurance/Quality Control" (QA/QC) plan for STO work.
  • Manage "Discovery Work" and "Change Orders" without losing control of the schedule.
  • Implement a "Zero-Harm" safety program for high-density work environments.
  • Optimize "Logistics and Infrastructure" (Cranes, Scaffolding, Tool Cribs).
  • Execute a "Flawless Startup" through systematic handover and testing.
  • Conduct a "Post-Outage Review" to capture lessons learned for the next cycle.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is essential for Turnaround Managers, Maintenance Engineers, Plant Managers, Shutdown Planners, Project Managers, and Procurement Leads.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
