Sustainable Lab Practices: Waste Management and Green Disposal
| 06 – 10 Apr. 2026, Abu Dhabi | 03 – 07 Aug. 2026, Dubai |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
The meaning of this course lies in the integration of "Environmental Responsibility" into the core operations of the modern analytical laboratory. Laboratory activities are inherently resource-intensive, generating significant volumes of hazardous chemicals, plastic waste, and energy consumption. This program provides the technical and managerial framework required to implement "Green Chemistry" principles and sustainable waste management protocols that reduce the ecological footprint of the laboratory while maintaining scientific excellence.
The scope of the training addresses the comprehensive lifecycle of laboratory waste, from "Source Reduction" to "Final Disposal." It covers the classification of waste streams: Chemical, Biological, Radioactive, and General, focusing on the legal requirements for segregation, labeling, and storage. Participants will explore the principles of "Sustainability Audits," energy-efficient equipment operation, and the implementation of "Recycling" programs for non-hazardous laboratory consumables.
The coverage includes a detailed investigation into "Solvent Recovery" techniques, the reduction of "Single-Use Plastics" in the lab, and the selection of "Eco-Friendly" reagents. The course emphasizes the role of the "Sustainability Officer" and the development of a "Green Lab Certification" program. By mastering these sustainable protocols, participants will be able to ensure regulatory compliance, reduce waste disposal costs, and contribute to the organization’s "Environmental, Social, and Governance" (ESG) goals.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Define the core principles of "Sustainability" in a laboratory setting.
- Implement the "12 Principles of Green Chemistry" in analytical methods.
- Classify laboratory waste streams according to international standards.
- Execute "Waste Segregation" and "Labeling" protocols correctly.
- Design a "Chemical Inventory Management" system to reduce waste.
- Optimize "Fume Hood" and "Cold Storage" usage for energy savings.
- Implement "Solvent Recovery" and "Reagent Substitution" programs.
- Manage "Biological and Biohazardous Waste" disposal safely.
- Conduct a "Sustainability Audit" of laboratory operations.
- Reduce "Single-Use Plastic" consumption in the lab environment.
- Evaluate the "Life Cycle Assessment" (LCA) of laboratory equipment.
- Document "Sustainability Metrics" for corporate ESG reporting.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This course is intended for Sustainability Officers, Laboratory Managers, Safety Coordinators, and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialists.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
