Petrochemical Analytical Excellence: Advanced Oil & Gas Techniques

22 – 26 June 2026, Abu Dhabi09 – 13 Nov. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The meaning of this course lies in the technical mastery of the sophisticated analytical methods required to characterize complex hydrocarbon matrices within the oil and gas sector. As the energy industry moves toward non-conventional sources and stricter environmental regulations, the ability to perform high-resolution molecular and elemental analysis is paramount for refining efficiency and product quality. This program provides the specialized scientific framework needed to transition from basic testing to advanced petrochemical diagnostics.

The scope of the training addresses the application of high-end instrumentation to the specific challenges of the petroleum industry, including the detection of trace contaminants and the structural analysis of heavy ends. It covers the advanced use of High-Resolution Gas Chromatography (HRGC), Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) for metal profiling, and the implementation of Simulated Distillation (SimDist) techniques. Participants will explore the technical nuances of "Fingerprinting" crude oils and the identification of "Unknowns" in process streams using hyphenated mass spectrometry.

The coverage includes a rigorous investigation into the characterization of sulfur and nitrogen species, the analysis of lubricants and additives, and the validation of ASTM/UOP methods for complex refinery samples. The course emphasizes the importance of data interpretation in solving operational problems and the development of specialized laboratory workflows for "Produced Water" and "Natural Gas Liquids" (NGL). By mastering these advanced techniques, participants will be able to provide the critical insights needed to optimize refinery yields and ensure the highest standards of petrochemical excellence.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Define the chemical complexity and analytical challenges of crude oil and its derivatives.
  • Master Advanced Gas Chromatography (GC) techniques for Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis (DHA).
  • Utilize Simulated Distillation (SimDist) to predict refinery fractionation behavior.
  • Perform trace elemental analysis of catalysts and feedstocks using ICP-MS.
  • Interpret Mass Spectrometry (MS) data for the identification of sulfur and nitrogen species.
  • Characterize the physical and chemical properties of lubricants and specialized additives.
  • Implement ASTM and UOP standards for high-precision petrochemical testing.
  • Validate in-house modifications of standard petroleum analytical methods.
  • Utilize Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for the monitoring of fuel degradation.
  • Analyze "Produced Water" for organic and inorganic contaminants in the field.
  • Troubleshoot complex instrumental failures in a high-pressure refinery environment.
  • Lead the implementation of "Quality by Design" (QbD) in petrochemical laboratories.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is intended for Senior Chemists, Petroleum Engineers, Refinery Laboratory Managers, and Analytical Specialists in the Oil and Gas sector.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
