Green Laboratory Accreditation: Sustainable Methods and Energy Efficiency
| 11 – 15 May 2026, Dubai | 10 – 14 Aug. 2026, Abu Dhabi |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
The meaning of this course lies in the evolution of laboratory operations from resource-intensive environments to sustainable, eco-friendly facilities. Traditionally, laboratories have been among the highest consumers of energy and water per square foot, while generating significant volumes of hazardous waste. This program provides the roadmap for integrating "Green" principles into the laboratory quality management system, ensuring that scientific excellence is achieved without compromising environmental integrity.
The scope of the training addresses the multifaceted aspects of laboratory sustainability, ranging from energy-efficient equipment selection to the implementation of green chemistry in analytical methods. It covers the transition from toxic solvents to bio-based alternatives and the optimization of fume hood operations to reduce HVAC energy consumption. Participants will explore the frameworks for green laboratory accreditation, such as My Green Lab and LEAF, which provide standardized metrics for evaluating environmental performance.
The coverage includes a comprehensive look at waste minimization strategies, including chemical recycling and the reduction of single-use plastics in the lab. The course emphasizes the importance of life-cycle assessments for laboratory procurement and the role of digital transformation in reducing paper waste and travel-related carbon footprints. By mastering these sustainable practices, laboratory leaders can significantly reduce operating costs, enhance their organizational reputation, and contribute to global climate goals.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Define the core principles of green laboratory management and sustainability.
- Evaluate laboratory energy consumption and identify efficiency opportunities.
- Implement "Green Chemistry" principles in analytical method development.
- Transition from hazardous solvents to safer, sustainable alternatives.
- Optimize fume hood usage to reduce HVAC energy and carbon footprints.
- Design robust waste minimization and chemical recycling programs.
- Select laboratory equipment based on life-cycle energy and water costs.
- Navigate the requirements for international green laboratory certifications.
- Reduce the usage of single-use plastics in daily laboratory workflows.
- Implement digital solutions to eliminate paper-based documentation systems.
- Calculate the carbon footprint of laboratory operations and procurement.
- Foster a culture of sustainability among scientific and technical staff.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This course is intended for Laboratory Managers, Sustainability Officers, Quality Assurance Professionals, and Facility Managers in scientific organizations.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
