Foundational Laboratory Science: Chemistry for Technical Support Personnel

26 – 30 Jan. 2026, Abu Dhabi16 – 20 Nov. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The meaning of this course lies in providing the essential chemical and scientific literacy required for non-scientific staff to function safely and effectively within a laboratory environment. Technical support personnel—including maintenance, logistics, and administrative staff—frequently interact with hazardous materials and sensitive equipment without a formal scientific background. This program bridges that knowledge gap, transforming support staff into informed partners in the laboratory’s success.

The scope of the training focuses on the practical and safety-oriented aspects of chemistry. It addresses the fundamental properties of matter, the classification of chemical hazards, and the basic principles of laboratory measurements. Participants will explore the "Why" behind laboratory rules, learning how to interpret safety documentation, handle chemical inventory, and understand the basic technical language used by the analytical chemists they support.

The coverage includes a comprehensive look at the Periodic Table, pH scales, chemical compatibility, and the fundamentals of laboratory hygiene. The course emphasizes the importance of the "Chain of Custody," the basics of weight and volume measurement, and the safe operation of common lab utilities like gas cylinders and vacuum systems. By mastering these foundational concepts, support personnel can enhance their own safety, improve operational efficiency, and contribute to the overall integrity of the laboratory facility.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Define the basic structure of the atom and the nature of elements.
  • Navigate the Periodic Table to identify hazardous chemical groups.
  • Differentiate between solids, liquids, and gases in the lab.
  • Interpret GHS labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) accurately.
  • Explain the significance of the pH scale for safety and cleaning.
  • Identify incompatible chemical groups to prevent accidental reactions.
  • Utilize basic lab measurement tools for weight and volume.
  • Describe the function of common laboratory equipment (Centrifuges, Ovens).
  • Manage the safe handling and storage of compressed gas cylinders.
  • Implement proper laboratory hygiene and PPE protocols.
  • Assist in the "Chain of Custody" and sample logging process.
  • Communicate effectively with chemists using correct technical terms.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is intended for Laboratory Assistants, Maintenance Technicians, Procurement Officers, Warehouse Staff, and Administrative Personnel working in chemical environments.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
