Instrument Documents: Lifecycle, Control, and Updates
| 11 – 15 May 2026, Sharm El Shaikh | 05 – 09 Oct. 2026, Abu Dhabi |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
The purpose of this course is to establish a rigorous framework for the management of technical documentation throughout the entire lifespan of industrial instrumentation and control systems. In complex process environments, the accuracy of diagrams, data sheets, and loop drawings is a fundamental requirement for safety, troubleshooting, and regulatory compliance. This program provides the administrative and technical skills needed to ensure that the "as-built" reality of the plant matches its documented records.
The scope of this training encompasses the standard suite of instrument documents, including P&IDs, Instrument Indexes, Loop Diagrams, and Hook-up Drawings. Participants will explore the lifecycle phases of documentation—from the initial design and engineering phase through construction, commissioning, and decades of operation. The curriculum is specifically designed to address the challenges of the "Management of Change" (MOC) process, ensuring that field modifications are accurately reflected in the central document management system.
Coverage includes the practical use of digital document control platforms, the interpretation of ISA S5.1 symbols, and the creation of comprehensive calibration records. Attendees will learn how to audit existing documentation for errors, manage vendor data packages, and streamline the handover process between project teams and maintenance departments. By focusing on the integrity of the data, the course ensures that participants can provide the reliable information necessary for safe plant operations and efficient maintenance activities.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Analyze the role of documentation in process safety and reliability.
- Interpret ISA S5.1 symbols used in P&IDs and Loop Drawings.
- Navigate and update a master Instrument Index and Database.
- Create and modify Loop Diagrams and Terminal Termination Details.
- Develop comprehensive Instrument Data Sheets (Specification Sheets).
- Implement a robust Management of Change (MOC) procedure for drawings.
- Audit "As-Built" drawings against physical field installations.
- Manage Vendor Data, Manuals, and Spare Parts Lists.
- Utilize Digital Document Management Systems (EDMS) effectively.
- Coordinate the documentation handover process during commissioning.
- Ensure compliance with international standards for technical labeling.
- Develop standardized templates for calibration and maintenance logs.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This course is intended for Document Controllers, Instrumentation Technicians, Project Engineers, Maintenance Planners, and Quality Assurance Personnel.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
