Fire and Gas Detection and Alarm Systems (FGS)

18 – 22 May 2026, Abu Dhabi17 – 21 Aug. 2026, Dubai

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The purpose of this course involves the specialized engineering of Fire and Gas Systems (FGS), which serve as the critical "early warning" layer in industrial safety. Unlike the process control system, the FGS is designed to detect the presence of flammable or toxic gases and early-stage fires, initiating automated mitigation actions to protect personnel and minimize asset damage. This program provides the technical knowledge required to design and manage these life-safety systems in high-risk environments.

The scope of this training encompasses the selection of detection technologies, the mapping of sensor locations, and the logic of the FGS controller. Participants will explore the physics of fire detection (UV/IR) and gas detection (Catalytic, Electrochemical, and Open Path), learning how to optimize coverage while minimizing nuisance alarms. The curriculum is structured to address the performance-based design requirements found in international standards such as NFPA 72 and ISA TR84.00.07.

Coverage includes the practical integration of the FGS with other safety systems, such as Emergency Shutdown (ESD) and fire suppression units. Attendees will learn how to conduct "Fire and Gas Mapping" to verify detection coverage, manage voting logic to prevent spurious trips, and maintain system integrity through rigorous proof testing. By focusing on both the hardware in the field and the safety logic, the course ensures that participants can manage FGS installations that are reliable, compliant, and effective during a real emergency.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Analyze the role of Fire and Gas Systems in the overall safety lifecycle.
  • Select appropriate detection technologies for various gas and fire hazards.
  • Perform Fire and Gas Mapping to ensure adequate detector coverage.
  • Design FGS voting logic (e.g., 2ooN) to balance safety and availability.
  • Implement NFPA 72 and ISA TR84 standards for FGS design and operation.
  • Configure flammable gas detectors (LEL) and toxic gas sensors (H2S).
  • Utilize Flame Detectors (UV/IR/MSIR) and optimize their field of view.
  • Integrate FGS with Fire Suppression (Deluge) and ESD systems.
  • Conduct proof testing and calibration of gas and fire sensors.
  • Troubleshoot communication and hardware faults in FGS controllers.
  • Evaluate FGS performance using Safety Integrity Level (SIL) concepts.
  • Manage alarm prioritization and HMI displays for emergency response.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is intended for Safety Engineers, Instrument Technicians, Fire Protection Specialists, Loss Prevention Engineers, and Automation Engineers involved in industrial safety systems.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
