Automatic Tank Gauging (ATG): Installation and Operation

01 – 05 June 2026, Dubai19 – 23 Oct. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The Automatic Tank Gauging (ATG): Installation and Operation course is a comprehensive technical program focused on the precision measurement of liquid levels and volumes in industrial storage tanks. Accurate gauging is critical for inventory management, custody transfer, and overfill prevention in the petroleum, chemical, and water industries. This course explores the physics behind modern measurement technologies, including radar, servo, and hydrostatic systems, ensuring that participants understand how to achieve high-accuracy results in diverse and challenging storage environments.

The scope of this training covers the entire installation lifecycle, from initial site survey and sensor selection to the mechanical mounting and electrical integration of gauging hardware. Participants will learn the requirements for stilling well design, nozzle placement, and temperature compensation techniques that are essential for calculating net standard volumes. The curriculum provides hands-on guidance on configuring tank hubs and communication protocols, such as Modbus and Varec, to ensure seamless data flow from the tank farm to the control room.

This coverage also emphasizes the operational and maintenance aspects required to ensure long-term system reliability and regulatory compliance. The course addresses the calibration procedures for ATG systems, the integration of high-level alarms for safety, and the troubleshooting of common measurement errors caused by foam, turbulence, or vapor pressure. By focusing on both the mechanical hardware and the digital monitoring software, the program prepares attendees to manage complex tank farms while adhering to API and ISO standards for inventory accuracy.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Explain the operating principles of Radar (GWR and Non-contact) and Servo ATG systems.
  • Select the appropriate gauging technology based on fluid properties and tank design.
  • Implement correct installation procedures for sensors, stilling wells, and nozzles.
  • Configure ATG transmitters for accurate level, temperature, and pressure measurement.
  • Calculate Gross and Net Standard Volumes using API MPMS standards.
  • Integrate ATG systems with SCADA and Inventory Management Software.
  • Design and test independent overfill prevention systems (High-High Alarms).
  • Perform field calibration and verification of tank gauges using manual dipping methods.
  • Troubleshoot signal interference and measurement inaccuracies in pressurized tanks.
  • Manage tank farm communication networks and protocol conversion units.
  • Maintain ATG hardware in hazardous areas (ATEX/IECEx compliance).
  • Execute routine preventative maintenance to ensure continuous inventory visibility.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is designed for Instrumentation Technicians, Tank Farm Supervisors, Terminal Managers, Maintenance Engineers, and Inventory Control Personnel involved in the storage and handling of bulk liquids.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
