Sequence Stratigraphy: Principles and Applications

08 – 12 June 2026, Dubai28 Sep. – 02 Oct. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Sequence stratigraphy is a fundamental geological framework used to interpret the sedimentary response to changes in sea level, tectonics, and sediment supply. By organizing strata into genetically related units bounded by chronostratigraphic surfaces, this discipline allows for a more predictable understanding of basin architecture than traditional lithostratigraphy. This course provides a comprehensive foundation in the conceptual models used to subdivide the rock record into sequences, parasequences, and systems tracts.

The scope of this course extends from the historical development of stratigraphic theories to the modern application of these concepts in hydrocarbon exploration and mineral studies. Participants will examine how the interplay between accommodation space and sediment flux determines the stacking patterns of sedimentary bodies. The curriculum focuses on identifying key surfaces such as sequence boundaries and maximum flooding surfaces, which are essential for correlating distant well data and predicting the lateral continuity of reservoir facies.

Coverage includes the practical application of these principles across various depositional settings, including fluvial, deltaic, shelfal, and deep-marine environments. By mastering sequence stratigraphic analysis, geoscientists can develop more accurate paleogeographic reconstructions and identify stratigraphic traps that might be overlooked using standard mapping techniques. This methodology is indispensable for reducing risk in exploration and optimizing the development of complex sedimentary reservoirs.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Explain the evolution of stratigraphic concepts from lithostratigraphy to sequence stratigraphy.
  • Define the relationship between eustasy, tectonics, and sediment supply in creating accommodation.
  • Identify sequence boundaries and unconformities in both outcrop and subsurface data.
  • Describe the characteristics of progradational, aggradational, and retrogradational stacking patterns.
  • Differentiate between the various types of systems tracts and their depositional timing.
  • Apply the principles of parasequence analysis to correlate high-resolution well logs.
  • Predict the distribution of sandstone and carbonate facies within a sequence framework.
  • Construct Wheeler diagrams to visualize the chronostratigraphic distribution of rock units.
  • Analyze the impact of global sea-level cycles on regional depositional history.
  • Integrate biostratigraphic data to calibrate the timing of stratigraphic surfaces.
  • Utilize sequence stratigraphy to identify potential stratigraphic traps and seals.
  • Interpret the migration of shorelines in response to changing base levels.
  • Formulate a predictive depositional model for an underexplored sedimentary basin.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Geologists, Explorationists, Sedimentologists, Reservoir Engineers, and Graduate Students looking to strengthen their stratigraphic interpretation skills.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
