Seismic Analysis of Stratigraphic Sequences

01 – 05 June 2026, Abu Dhabi21 – 25 Sep. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Seismic analysis of stratigraphic sequences represents a specialized branch of geophysics that integrates seismic data with stratigraphic principles to interpret the depositional history of sedimentary basins. This discipline focuses on identifying distinct seismic packages bounded by unconformities, allowing geoscientists to reconstruct chronological sequences of rock layers. By examining the geometric patterns of seismic reflections, interpreters can infer the processes of sediment supply, sea-level changes, and tectonic influences that shaped the subsurface environment over geological time.

The scope of this course encompasses the fundamental techniques of seismic facies analysis and the identification of systemic tracts within a stratigraphic framework. Participants will explore how reflection parameters such as configuration, continuity, and amplitude—reveal the physical properties and depositional environments of the strata. This methodology is crucial for mapping the spatial distribution of reservoirs, seals, and source rocks, providing a robust predictive model for hydrocarbon exploration and production.

Coverage extends to the practical application of sequence stratigraphic concepts in both exploration and development phases. The course details the transition from raw seismic data to high-resolution stratigraphic models, emphasizing the recognition of sequence boundaries and condensed sections. Through this comprehensive approach, professionals gain the ability to reduce geological risk by understanding the genetic relationships between different sedimentary units and their implications for reservoir connectivity and quality.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Define the core principles of seismic stratigraphy and its role in modern basin analysis.
  • Identify major sequence boundaries and unconformities using seismic reflection geometries.
  • Differentiate between various systemic tracts including highstand, lowstand, and transgressive systems.
  • Analyze seismic facies to determine paleo-depositional environments and energy levels.
  • Apply the concepts of eustasy and tectonics to explain observed stratigraphic architectures.
  • Interpret reflection terminations such as onlap, downlap, toplap, and erosional truncation.
  • Construct chronostratigraphic charts (Wheeler diagrams) from seismic section data.
  • Evaluate the impact of sediment supply rates on the progradation and aggradation of sequences.
  • Predict the location of potential reservoir sands within deep-water and shallow-marine settings.
  • Integrate well log data with seismic profiles to validate stratigraphic interpretations.
  • Utilize seismic attributes to enhance the visibility of subtle stratigraphic features.
  • Assess the risk and uncertainty associated with stratigraphic trap identification.
  • Formulate a comprehensive depositional model based on 2D and 3D seismic data sets.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Geologists, Geophysicists, Exploration Managers, Reservoir Engineers, and Technical Professionals involved in basin analysis and hydrocarbon exploration.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
