Operations Geology Fundamentals

08 – 12 June 2026, Abu Dhabi26 – 30 Oct. 2026, Sharm El Shaikh

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Operations Geology Fundamentals serves as the essential bridge between the geological office and the active drilling rig. This course provides a comprehensive deep dive into the daily responsibilities of an Operations Geologist, focusing on the preparation, execution, and post-drilling analysis of a well. Participants will explore the critical nature of communication between multi-disciplinary teams and learn how to manage the flow of geological data in real-time to ensure that drilling objectives are met safely and efficiently.

The coverage includes the creation of pre-drill documents such as the Geological Well Program and the predicted pore pressure profile. Attendees will study the mechanics of mud logging, the interpretation of gas while drilling, and the description of drill cuttings to confirm stratigraphic positioning. The scope also addresses the selection of casing points based on geological markers and the management of unexpected subsurface hazards like shallow gas or high-pressure zones, which require immediate technical decision-making to avoid costly downtime.

Furthermore, the course addresses the coordination of specialized services, including wireline logging, coring operations, and Logging While Drilling (LWD). Participants will learn how to perform initial log interpretations to identify pay zones and how to finalize the composite log and final geological report. By the end of this course, participants will have a robust understanding of the operational lifecycle of a well and the skills necessary to represent geological interests on the rig site and in the operations center.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Define the primary roles and responsibilities of an Operations Geologist.
  • Construct a comprehensive Geological Well Program (GWP).
  • Coordinate effectively between drilling, petrophysics, and engineering departments.
  • Supervise mud logging services and evaluate the quality of cuttings descriptions.
  • Interpret real-time gas shows and determine their significance for reservoir detection.
  • Identify stratigraphic markers and "top" picks during active drilling operations.
  • Manage the selection of casing and coring points based on geological data.
  • Monitor pore pressure indicators to ensure safe mud weight management.
  • Oversee wireline logging operations and perform quick-look interpretations.
  • Recognize and mitigate geological drilling hazards like lost circulation zones.
  • Prepare daily geological reports and maintain accurate well-site records.
  • Finalize the Composite Well Log and the End of Well Report (EOWR).
  • Utilize LWD and MWD data for real-time geosteering decisions.
  • Evaluate the technical performance of service contractors on the rig.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Junior Geologists, Mud Loggers, Well-site Geologists, and Drilling Engineers who need to understand the geological aspects of rig operations.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
