Geospatial Data QA and Cartographic Standards for Upstream Projects

29 June – 03 July 2026, Dubai21 – 25 Sep. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Geospatial data quality and cartographic excellence are foundational to the safety, legal compliance, and technical accuracy of upstream petroleum projects. This course provides a comprehensive framework for ensuring that spatial datasets—ranging from seismic surveys to pipeline routes—are accurate, consistent, and well-documented. Participants will learn how to implement rigorous Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) procedures to detect and correct spatial errors before they impact operations. The scope covers the entire data lifecycle, from field collection and database ingestion to final map production.

The coverage of this course emphasizes the technical standards required for high-stakes upstream activities. Attendees will learn about the critical role of metadata, coordinate reference systems (CRS), and geodetic datums in maintaining data integrity across multi-disciplinary teams. The curriculum details the "cartographic standards" necessary for creating maps that are not only visually professional but also technically unambiguous. By standardizing symbology, scales, and labeling, organizations can ensure that complex geological and engineering information is communicated clearly to decision-makers and regulatory bodies.

Furthermore, the course addresses the management of "legacy data" and the challenges of integrating information from diverse sources and vintages. Participants will explore the use of automated QC tools and spatial data validation workflows. The training also highlights the legal importance of accurate mapping in concession management and international boundary disputes. By the end of the course, participants will be able to establish a "spatial data governance" framework that protects the company’s digital assets and reduces the risk of costly spatial blunders in the field.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Define the principles of Geospatial Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC).
  • Implement technical standards for spatial data management in upstream.
  • Identify and correct errors in Coordinate Reference Systems (CRS) and Datums.
  • Develop robust metadata profiles for all geospatial assets.
  • Apply professional cartographic standards to map production.
  • Perform spatial data validation and topology checks.
  • Standardize symbology and labeling for oil and gas infrastructure.
  • Manage the integration of legacy maps and multi-vintage datasets.
  • Utilize automated QC workflows to ensure data consistency.
  • Evaluate the accuracy and reliability of third-party spatial data.
  • Ensure legal compliance in boundary mapping and lease management.
  • Establish data governance protocols for multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Create standardized map templates for corporate reporting.
  • Audit geospatial databases for completeness and accuracy.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

GIS Analysts, Geomatics Engineers, Data Managers, and Explorationists responsible for the integrity and visualization of subsurface and surface data.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
