Geomatics Applications in Environmental Assessment
| 18 – 22 May 2026, Abu Dhabi | 17 – 21 Aug. 2026,Dubai |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
Geomatics, the integrated approach to measuring, analyzing, and managing spatial data, is a fundamental tool for environmental assessment and monitoring in the energy industry. This course explores how GIS, remote sensing, and GNSS technologies are applied to understand the interaction between industrial activities and the natural environment. Participants will learn how to use spatial tools to baseline environmental conditions, predict potential impacts, and design mitigation strategies. The scope covers the entire project lifecycle, from initial Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) to long-term site restoration and closure.
The coverage of this course includes the acquisition and processing of multi-spectral satellite imagery to monitor land cover changes, vegetation health, and coastal erosion. Attendees will learn how to integrate diverse datasets—such as topography, hydrology, and biodiversity records—into a GIS framework to identify environmentally sensitive areas. The curriculum also details the use of LIDAR and Digital Terrain Models (DTM) for modeling flood risks and air quality dispersion. By leveraging these geomatics tools, environmental professionals can provide more accurate, evidence-based assessments that satisfy regulatory requirements and corporate sustainability goals.
Furthermore, the course addresses the role of geomatics in emergency response and spill management. Participants will explore how real-time spatial data and predictive modeling are used to track oil spills or hazardous releases, optimizing the deployment of cleanup resources. The course also discusses the use of drones (UAVs) for high-resolution environmental inspections and the monitoring of protected habitats. By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and implement a geomatics-based environmental monitoring program, ensuring that operations remain compliant and environmentally responsible.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Define the role of geomatics in environmental management.
- Utilize GIS for mapping environmentally sensitive areas (ESAs).
- Process satellite imagery for land cover and land use classification.
- Apply remote sensing techniques to monitor vegetation and habitat health.
- Analyze Digital Elevation Models (DEM) for hydrological and flood modeling.
- Integrate biodiversity and cultural heritage data into environmental assessments.
- Use geomatics tools to design pipeline routes with minimal environmental impact.
- Monitor coastal erosion and shoreline changes using multi-temporal data.
- Apply LIDAR data for high-resolution topographical and forest assessments.
- Leverage real-time spatial data for oil spill response and modeling.
- Utilize UAV (drone) technology for environmental inspections.
- Perform spatial analysis for site selection and waste management.
- Develop environmental monitoring dashboards using Web-GIS.
- Understand the role of geomatics in climate change impact studies.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Environmental Scientists, Sustainability Officers, GIS Specialists, and Project Managers involved in environmental permitting and monitoring.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
