Geology and Hydrocarbon Potential
| 11 – 15 May 2026, Dubai | 10 – 14 Aug. 2026, Abu Dhabi |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
This course provides a comprehensive overview of how geological processes control the occurrence and distribution of oil and gas accumulations worldwide. It serves as an essential guide for understanding the fundamental relationship between Earth’s history and the formation of energy resources. Participants will explore the diverse range of geological environments that host hydrocarbons, from ancient sedimentary basins to modern offshore frontiers. The scope covers the basics of plate tectonics, stratigraphy, and structural geology, and how these disciplines converge to define the hydrocarbon potential of a region.
The coverage focuses on the essential "Petroleum System" concept, which tracks the life cycle of a hydrocarbon from its origin in organic-rich sediments to its entrapment in porous reservoir rocks. Attendees will learn to characterize different basin types such as rifts, passive margins, and foreland basins—and understand the unique potential and risks associated with each. The curriculum details the geological factors that influence reservoir quality, seal effectiveness, and the timing of hydrocarbon generation. By analyzing successful play types, participants will gain the skills to recognize the "ingredients" required for a high-potential exploration area.
Furthermore, the course addresses the global distribution of hydrocarbon provinces and the geological reasons behind their varying productivity. It examines the transition from conventional to unconventional resources and how geological understanding is adapting to new challenges. The curriculum is designed to be highly visual, utilizing global case studies to illustrate complex geological concepts. By the end of the course, participants will be able to perform a high-level assessment of the hydrocarbon potential of a basin, providing a solid foundation for further specialized studies in geoscience or engineering.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Define the geological components of a Petroleum System.
- Understand the role of plate tectonics in basin formation.
- Identify the characteristics of major sedimentary basin types.
- Explain the process of organic matter preservation and maturation.
- Distinguish between different types of reservoir rocks and facies.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of various trapping mechanisms.
- Describe the geological time scale and its relevance to petroleum.
- Analyze the impact of structural deformation on hydrocarbon potential.
- Recognize the geological signatures of world-class source rocks.
- Compare the potential of siliciclastic versus carbonate reservoirs.
- Understand the geological factors that control unconventional resources.
- Use global analogs to assess regional hydrocarbon potential.
- Identify the primary risks associated with different geological settings.
- Interpret basic geological maps and cross-sections for exploration.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Entry-level Geologists, Engineers, Analysts, and Non-Technical Professionals who require a broad understanding of petroleum geology and exploration potential.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
The National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants who complete a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
