Geographic Information Systems Applications in Oil and Gas Upstream

27 Apr. – 01 May 2026, Abu Dhabi27 – 31 July 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become the central nervous system for data integration in the upstream oil and gas industry. This course explores how GIS technology is used to manage, analyze, and visualize the vast arrays of spatial data generated during exploration and production. By providing a common platform for geological, geophysical, and engineering data, GIS enables multi-disciplinary teams to make more informed decisions. Participants will learn how to transition from simple map-making to advanced spatial analysis that can identify new trends and optimize field operations.

The scope of this course covers the entire GIS workflow, from data acquisition and database design to advanced spatial modeling. Coverage includes the management of seismic surveys, well locations, lease boundaries, and environmental data. Participants will learn how to handle complex coordinate systems, perform spatial joins, and create thematic maps that communicate technical risks effectively. The curriculum also emphasizes the importance of data integrity and metadata, ensuring that spatial information remains a reliable asset throughout the decades-long lifecycle of an oil field.

Furthermore, the course delves into advanced applications such as Play Fairway Analysis, site selection for drilling pads, and pipeline route optimization. Attendees will explore the integration of remote sensing data with GIS to monitor infrastructure and environmental impacts. The course also addresses the shift toward Web-GIS and mobile applications, which allow field workers and office staff to share real-time spatial information. By mastering these GIS tools, participants will be able to streamline workflows, reduce operational costs, and enhance the collaborative power of their technical teams.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Define the role of GIS in the upstream oil and gas lifecycle.
  • Manage vector and raster data formats used in the industry.
  • Design and maintain a robust spatial database (Geodatabase).
  • Navigate complex geodetic datums and coordinate transformations.
  • Perform spatial analysis to identify exploration "sweet spots."
  • Integrate seismic and well data into a GIS environment.
  • Create high-quality cartographic products for management reviews.
  • Utilize GIS for lease management and concession tracking.
  • Perform surface analysis and digital elevation modeling (DEM).
  • Apply GIS tools for environmental impact assessments and monitoring.
  • Optimize pipeline routes and facility locations using spatial cost-distance models.
  • Leverage Web-GIS for real-time data sharing and collaboration.
  • Implement quality control procedures for spatial data integrity.
  • Understand the future of 3D-GIS and Big Data integration.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Geologists, Geophysicists, GIS Specialists, Land Managers, and Environmental Scientists who need to leverage spatial data for upstream decision-making.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
