Advanced Seismic Interpretation: Structural and Stratigraphic Methods

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course offers an intensive exploration of the methodologies required to transform complex seismic data into detailed geological models. It focuses on the dual pillars of structural and stratigraphic interpretation, providing geoscientists with the tools to resolve intricate subsurface architectures. Participants will move beyond simple horizon tracking to investigate the mechanical and depositional processes that shape the seismic response, ensuring that interpretations are kinematically and sedimentologically valid.

The scope of this training includes advanced structural techniques such as fault linkage analysis, restoration, and the interpretation of salt and thrust-belt systems. Attendees will also master the principles of seismic sequence stratigraphy, learning to identify unconformity-bounded units and depositional systems tracts within 3D volumes. We emphasize the integration of seismic attributes and borehole data to delineate reservoir facies and predict lithological variations across the basin.

Coverage extends to the use of modern 3D visualization and volume rendering to reveal subtle stratigraphic traps and complex fault networks. By synthesizing structural styles with stratigraphic frameworks, participants will develop a holistic understanding of petroleum systems. This course aims to refine the interpreter’s ability to reduce risk and add value during both the exploration and development phases of the hydrocarbon lifecycle.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Identify and interpret diverse structural styles from extensional to compressional.
  • Apply kinematic principles to validate the consistency of structural models.
  • Map complex fault networks and analyze fault displacement and linkage.
  • Execute high-resolution seismic sequence stratigraphic analysis.
  • Identify system tracts and depositional environments from seismic facies.
  • Utilize 3D volume rendering and opacity blending for stratigraphic imaging.
  • Interpret complex salt geometries and sub-salt structural frameworks.
  • Perform detailed seismic-to-well ties for accurate time-depth calibration.
  • Delineate stratigraphic traps and subtle pinch-outs using seismic attributes.
  • Analyze paleo-geomorphology through seismic horizon and time slices.
  • Integrate regional tectonic history with local seismic interpretation.
  • Quantify interpretation uncertainty and its impact on prospect maturation.
  • Communicate complex geological findings through professional maps and sections.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Exploration Geologists, Geophysicists, Interpretation Specialists, and Asset Team Geoscientists seeking to enhance their subsurface mapping and conceptual skills.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
