Advanced Petroleum Geophysics Methods and Applications

27 Apr. – 01 May 2026, Abu Dhabi21 – 25 Sep. 2026, Dubai

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course provides a high-level technical overview of the sophisticated geophysical methods currently driving hydrocarbon exploration and field development. It moves beyond standard seismic interpretation to explore the integration of non-seismic methods, advanced wavefield physics, and quantitative analysis. Participants will examine how gravity, magnetics, electromagnetics, and specialized seismic techniques provide a holistic view of the petroleum system, particularly in areas where seismic imaging is traditionally challenging.

The scope of this training covers the theoretical and practical applications of Full Waveform Inversion (FWI), multicomponent seismic, and passive monitoring. We will explore how advanced signal processing and imaging algorithms can resolve complex subsurface architectures like sub-salt, sub-basalt, and overthrust regimes. Attendees will learn to synthesize disparate geophysical datasets to reduce non-uniqueness and improve the accuracy of structural and stratigraphic models.

Coverage includes the application of geophysics to unconventional resources, carbon sequestration, and geothermal energy, reflecting the evolving energy landscape. By mastering these advanced methods, geophysicists will be better equipped to tackle the most difficult exploration frontiers and provide higher-resolution reservoir descriptions. The course emphasizes the transition from qualitative imaging to quantitative property prediction.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate the application of advanced geophysical methods for diverse geological settings.
  • Understand the principles and benefits of Full Waveform Inversion (FWI).
  • Integrate gravity and magnetic data with seismic for regional basin analysis.
  • Utilize Controlled-Source Electromagnetics (CSEM) for fluid discrimination.
  • Analyze multicomponent (PS-wave) seismic for fracture and lithology detection.
  • Apply advanced velocity model building techniques (Tomography and FWI).
  • Execute passive microseismic monitoring for hydraulic fracture characterization.
  • Evaluate the impact of seismic anisotropy on imaging and interpretation.
  • Integrate borehole geophysics (VSP and Cross-well) with surface seismic.
  • Utilize high-resolution marine and land acquisition technologies.
  • Apply advanced noise attenuation and signal enhancement algorithms.
  • Quantify the uncertainty and non-uniqueness in integrated geophysical models.
  • Leverage geophysics for non-petroleum applications like CCS and Geothermal.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Senior Geophysicists, Exploration Managers, Interpretation Specialists, and Researchers seeking to stay at the forefront of geophysical technology.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
