Maritime Energy Efficiency: Compliance with IMO and Ship Energy Requirements
| 20 – 24 Apr. 2026, Abu Dhabi | 17 – 21 Aug. 2026, Dubai |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
The meaning of maritime energy efficiency refers to the suite of technical and operational measures implemented by shipowners and operators to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with global maritime law. This course focuses on the stringent regulatory frameworks established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), specifically the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII). By mastering these requirements, maritime professionals can ensure fleet compliance, avoid commercial penalties, and contribute to the IMO’s goal of net-zero emissions by or around 2050.
The scope of this training encompasses hull and propeller optimization, advanced propulsion technologies, and the implementation of "Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plans" (SEEMP). It examines the technicalities of voyage optimization—such as weather routing and "Just-in-Time" arrivals—and the role of alternative fuels like ammonia, methanol, and LNG in the maritime energy mix. The course provides a deep dive into the use of digital data collection and monitoring systems, which are now mandatory for reporting "Fuel Oil Consumption" (FCS) to global regulatory bodies.
Coverage includes the analysis of "Energy Saving Devices" (ESDs) like Mewis ducts and rotor sails, as well as the impact of hull fouling on hydrodynamic drag. The course addresses the critical challenge of "Biofouling Management" and the use of high-performance marine coatings to maintain vessel speed-power efficiency. Participants will gain practical expertise in calculating CII ratings, conducting onboard energy audits, and formulating fleet-wide modernization strategies that balance environmental compliance with the economic realities of global shipping.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
1. Navigate the IMO regulatory landscape: MARPOL Annex VI and beyond.
2. Calculate and verify the EEDI and EEXI for diverse vessel types.
3. Manage the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and its impact on vessel ratings.
4. Develop and implement a robust Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP).
5. Optimize voyage efficiency through weather routing and speed management.
6. Evaluate the ROI of "Energy Saving Devices" (ESDs) for existing fleets.
7. Analyze the impact of hull and propeller fouling on fuel consumption.
8. Assess the feasibility of Alternative Fuels: LNG, Methanol, Ammonia, and Hydrogen.
9. Implement mandatory "Fuel Oil Consumption" (FCS) data collection and reporting.
10. Utilize "Digital Twin" technology for real-time vessel performance monitoring.
11. Manage the energy impact of auxiliary systems and "Onboard Waste Heat Recovery."
12. Formulate a long-term fleet decarbonization strategy for shipowners.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This course is designed for Technical Managers, Fleet Superintendents, Naval Architects, Marine Engineers, Chartering Managers, Sustainability Officers, and Maritime Regulatory Consultants.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
