High-Performance Building Envelopes and Energy Efficiency for Infrastructure

02 – 06 Feb. 2026, Abu Dhabi06 – 10 July 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The meaning of high-performance building envelopes refers to the engineered separation between the interior and exterior environments of a structure, designed to minimize energy transfer and maximize occupant comfort. This course focuses on the "Fabric First" approach, which prioritizes the thermal integrity of the building shell—walls, roofs, windows, and foundations—before the implementation of mechanical heating and cooling systems. By optimizing the envelope, infrastructure projects can achieve drastic reductions in operational energy demand while ensuring long-term structural durability and climate resilience.

The scope of this training encompasses advanced materials science, including high-R-value insulation, phase-change materials, and smart glazing technologies. It examines the technicalities of thermal bridging, air infiltration, and moisture management, which are the primary drivers of envelope-related energy waste and building degradation. The course provides a deep dive into the engineering of "Passive House" standards and the utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to simulate the heat-mass-flow interactions within complex infrastructure projects.

Coverage includes the analysis of "Life Cycle Assessment" (LCA) for building materials and the integration of Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) into the facade. The course addresses the critical role of airtightness testing and infrared thermography in validating the performance of newly constructed or retrofitted envelopes. Participants will gain practical expertise in selecting climate-specific envelope strategies and formulating technical business cases for high-performance upgrades in commercial, industrial, and public infrastructure sectors.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

1.  Identify the fundamental components and functions of a high-performance building envelope.

2.  Calculate U-values and R-values for complex multi-layered wall and roof assemblies.

3.  Analyze the impact of thermal bridging on total building energy consumption.

4.  Design air barrier systems to meet stringent airtightness and permeability standards.

5.  Evaluate the performance of advanced glazing and dynamic "Smart Glass" technologies.

6.  Manage moisture and vapor drive to prevent interstitial condensation and mold.

7.  Implement "Cool Roof" and "Green Roof" technologies for urban heat island mitigation.

8.  Utilize thermal imaging cameras to identify envelope defects and energy leaks.

9.  Assess the ROI of high-performance insulation retrofits in existing infrastructure.

10.  Navigate the requirements of LEED, BREEAM, and Passive House certifications.

11.  Design facades that integrate Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV).

12.  Formulate a strategic roadmap for zero-energy building envelope construction.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is designed for Architects, Civil Engineers, Sustainability Consultants, Facility Managers, Infrastructure Project Leads, and Building Energy Auditors involved in the design and maintenance of energy-efficient structures.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
